Received this e-mail today from Senator Al Franken (D. MN) talking about how the Republicans plan to shut down the government as a way to defund the Affordable Health Care act is a really dumb idea:

Shutting down the government would stop infrastructure repair projects in their tracks, close national parks, and prevent small businesses from getting loans -- costing us jobs and hurting our economy.

In short, shutting down the government would be really dumb. And what’s worse is that the folks in Washington who are threatening a government shutdown right now want to do it for the worst possible reason: to pick another fight over Obamacare.

I can’t believe we have to tell them this, but we do. Click here to help me tell Washington Republicans not to do a dumb thing for the worst possible reason -- don’t shut down the government because you don’t like Obamacare!

If you didn’t like the job a carpenter did on your front porch, you wouldn’t burn down your house out of spite, would you? (Especially if the members of your family had elected the carpenter twice.)

It’s odd that it bothers some people so much to see young adults staying on their parents’ insurance, the Medicare donut hole closing, and insurance companies being held accountable (sending rebates back to millions of American families and businesses this summer!).

But it’s unthinkable that, just because they want to re-fight the same fight over Obamacare that we’ve won time and time again, they’d force a government shutdown and cause so much pain.

Sometimes, it’s hard to know what the right thing is to do. But this is not one of those times. Shutting down the government is the wrong thing to do. And disliking Obamacare is the worst possible reason to do it.

We have to take a stand.

Thanks,

P.S.: Republicans in Washington have tried to roll back Obamacare 40 times. Now some want to shut down the government to defund it. This is a terrible idea. And we have to fight back. Click here to sign my petition today!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
