Received this e-mail today from Senator Tom Udall (D. NM) calling on Republicans to not shut down the government:
In the coming weeks, Congress needs to pass a budget or the federal government shuts down.
The sequester is already doing serious damage to our economy, and some of us are trying to find a common-sense, middle-ground approach to the budget -- a deal that prioritizes New Mexico families over reckless, arbitrary spending cuts.
But then there are the champions of gridlock in the Senate taking a different tack -- threatening to shut down the government unless Democrats bend to their partisan ideological agenda.
This is no way to govern responsibly. Before the extreme faction making this threat follows through, I need you to show them just how many people are against a government shutdown.
Join with me in telling Congress to not shut down the government. Add your voice to mine:

A government shutdown is a raw deal for the American people. We’re still recovering from one of the worst recessions in our nation’s history. It’s not right to play political games with our economy.
If obstructionists get their way, thousands of federal employees could be furloughed without pay. Veterans’ benefits could be disrupted. Social services to the poor could be cut.
The ideological gridlock in Washington has to stop now. Congress should be looking for ways to help the American people, not penalize the middle class and the most vulnerable members of our society in order to advance an agenda.
Help me call on obstructionists in Congress to avoid a government shutdown. Take action now!
