My wife was the proclaimer at church this morning -- her week in a schedule laid out months ago. She shared that when she saw the chosen scripture for today, she groaned, as it was a tough one to preach on. Then she commented, drawing a laugh from the congregation, "That's okay -- you can't always draw the Easy-Peasy Scripture Straw."
As I thought about tonight's Brothers and Sisters, I sort of felt the same way. NSA-good, NSA-bad; Rox-Sux; Syria-yes, Syria-no, Syria-WTFknows. And meta, meta, meta, as far as the eye could see.
And then I thought, Isn't this just the right time for a Brothers and Sisters diary?
Let me explain.
Welcome to Brothers and Sisters, the weekly meetup for prayer* and community at Daily Kos. We put an asterisk on pray* to acknowledge that not everyone uses conventional religious language, but may want to share joys and concerns, or simply take solace in a meditative atmosphere. Anyone who comes in the spirit of mutual respect, warmth, and healing is welcome.
I mean, isn't right now the perfect time to remind ourselves that we have more in common than we know? Isn't it time to remember that the progressive cause is wide and deep, with many streams and many paths, and we have to pull together to get there?
And even more -- isn't it a good time to realize again that all of us, no matter where we stand on the issues, are human beings, sharing the human experience -- which means each of us has worries, and cares, and friends, and family, and memories and joys and wounds -- and that we all need a safe place to share those things, free of the worry of being misconstrued at best and attacked at worst?
As we enter an important week -- as we cuss and discuss our leaders, our country, the world, and what's next -- isn't it appropriate to take a deep breath, put our arms around each other, and help each other stand against the everyday of every day?
In light of ALL of this, isn't this the perfect time for a Brothers and Sisters diary?
If you think it is -- then join me in declaring this a Meta-Free Zone ... and also a very special, special zone: a "We're All In This Together, So Let's Care For Each Other" Zone.
Floor's open -- what is on your heart tonight?
