Governing in our country has devolved into repetitive games of political chicken. As a result, our country is left with crippling political gridlock that leaves our nation's issues lingering unaddressed. In a legislative process that is exceedingly difficult to navigate, there is no greater bottleneck than the filibuster.
Contrary to popular belief, Senators do not have to actually hold the floor in order to filibuster. All they have to do is inform the majority leader that they intend to filibuster a bill and voila, a 60 vote threshold is created. Does this force compromise? No. Does it ensure gridlock? Yes. Until we solve this problem every single contentious issue that requires legislative action will die. Neither party's agenda will ever be passed and the game of political chicken will rage on. I refuse to let this continue.
