U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (C) and Senator Mike Lee (2nd R) speak to reporters about their opposition after the Senate passed a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown, sending the issue back to the House of Representatives, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, September 27, 2013. The U.S. government braced on Friday for the possibility of a partial shutdown of operations on October 1 as Congress struggled to pass an emergency spending bill that Republicans want to use to defund the new healthcare reform law.   REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst    (UNITED STATES - Tags: POLITICS) - RTX142HC

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) thinks the plan his master Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) came up with to pick the winners and losers in the federal government for funding is a good one. This is the plan that House Republicans pissed on last week but decided to follow today, since they've run out of any other way to look like idiots. So here's Mike Lee, wanting the Senate to follow suit.
Lee said on the Senate floor that he supports passing temporary budgets for the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, the federal courts, NASA and the Interior Department so that their operations could continue while Congress debates funding for the Democrats’ health-care law.

"This is an effort to compromise, an effort that is badly needed," Lee said on the floor.

The House Republicans want to fund the Veterans Administration, National Parks/Smithsonian and Washington, D.C., with their mini spending bills. The Republicans unsurprisingly prioritize the stuff that goes with guns and big marble buildings as opposed to feeding women and children or providing cancer treatments. That's compromise, they tell us.

Lee has also backed away from making demands that Obamacare be mutilated in some way, saying, "Let’s leave Obamacare for another day and not hold hostage the vast majority of government functions." The government functions, that is, that his campaign donors are going to care about. While Lee says it's time to move on from Obamacare to getting government functioning again, he still wants to claim "credit for kickstarting the effort to use the federal budget as leverage to halt funding for Obamacare." Maybe he doesn't want to be Cruz's puppy dog anymore. Now that the whole scheme is falling down on their heads, Ted Cruz might just be willing to give Lee all the credit.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
