Cripple Creek District, Colorado - Woods Investment Forced to Close the Gold Coin
The Woods Investment Company has been forced by virtue of their membership in the Mine Owners Association to close the Gold Coin Mine. Mr. Woods has long been satisfied with work of the union miners employed there, however, the Mine Owners Association now requires all those affiliated with the Association to work their property with employees who are not members of the Western Federation of Miners.
Just this past Wednesday evening, Mr. Woods, himself, met the miners as they ended their shift at the Gold Coin Mine. He explained to them that each of them would be required to drop his membership in the W. F. of M. in order to remain employed at the mine.
Not one single miner would agree to become a scab, and the Gold Coin Mine was shut down. A committee of the miners was sent to the Economic Mill, also owned by Woods. The men working there, when informed of events at the Gold Coin, promptly walked out. Not one remained behind.

Ludlow Tent Colony, Colorado - 1300 men, women, and children, establish a village.
Ludlow Tent Colony
It has been more than one week since the mass exodus of the strikers and their families from the company towns. Numerous tent colonies have been established in the strike zone by the United Mine Workers of America where people, of many different nationalities, and speaking many different languages, are forming new villages together.
Ludlow is the largest of the colonies, spread out over 40 acres, and with an estimated population of 500 men, 400 women, and 400 children. John Lawson has described the Ludlow Colony as the "biggest industrial colony in the world." The tents are laid out in rows and each has a number painted on the front. There is a large common tent, used as a school during the day, and a meeting house at night.
In the center of the colony is a large public square with a raised platform for outdoor meetings, and a bulletin board for public notices. A baseball diamond lies just across the road. There is also a dance hall where the music and dances of all the various nationalities can be celebrated.
The residents of Ludlow proudly fly the flags of their estimated 20 different nationalities. Most prominent among them are the flags of Greece, Italy, and the American flag. Another flag proudly waves above the colony. This is the flag which bears the name that unites all who live here no matter their nationality: the flag of two colors which simply reads "LUDLOW."

Email from Progressive Change Campaign Committee:
[Yesterday] morning at 12:01am, Congressional Republicans shut down the government.
Millions of Americans are going to suffer -- seniors, veterans, students, businesses, and workers -- while those responsible for the shutdown get paid.
This is a moment where phone calls to Democrats in Congress will make a huge difference.
Call Rep. Hinojosa and tell him to end this shutdown NOW.
This shutdown will end in one of two ways:
1) Democrats will cave and cut vital programs like Social Security or
2) Republicans will cave to immense public pressure.
Flooding Democrats' offices with phone calls will make sure it's not option 1. We're also running online ads targeting Republican Speaker John Boehner to make sure he feels extra pressure back home.
Can you call Rep. Hinojosa and tell him to end this government shutdown?
Thanks for being a bold progressive.

Sadly the link for a script does not work on the email that I received.
I suggest a simple script:
Please hold firm and do not fold to Republican hostage-taking!
