Note: When this diary was published Galtisalie was still a separate pseudonym from Francisco Nejdanov Solomin. Here's an explanation for the prior separate pseudonyms and the decision to discard the separation: http://www.dailykos.com/...
On Friday, xaxnar brilliantly captured why even the studly John Galt needs a decent world around him where he can flex his handsome muscles, or, as I would see it, exploit. Francisco Nejdanov Solomin in Mutual Aid in Opa-locka has captured another problem with our attempting to emulate John Galt, even if we wanted to: abandoning our brothers and sisters to their fates in the slums of the U.S. and the world is "soul-destroying"--of us as well as them. In other words, escape is illusion.
Brother Francisco's photographs depict "Alienation in Opa-locka" in the smiling 1960's photographs of his mother's soon to be deceased or incarcerated half-siblings, forgotten remnants of drug addiction and the failed war on drugs. Things do not appear to have gotten any better for the desperate of Opa-locka since his mother tried to leave it all behind:
His mother's poignant attachment to her damaged goods family exemplifies that we are all one, and that personal success can only mask the shattered histories many of us bear in our hearts. Rendering Mutual Aid in Opa-locka or any other "forgotten" place will not be easy, but it is not only their lifeline but ours as well.
Peace.
