Did the sun just rise in the west? Did the magnetic poles shift? Did a bear use a public restroom?

I must say I was amazed to find out that Itsy Bitsy Government monger Senator Rand Paul is losing no sleep over our debt ceiling.

Astonished is more like it. Did someone paste a jacket cover of We The Living on a Paul Krugman book and give it to Rand for Christmas?

Senator Paul revealed the struggle between his inner Keynes and his outer Ayn on Sunday morning talk show Meet the Press, guest hosted by Savannah Guthrie who inadvertently had the studio klieg lights turned up to clown mask melting temperatures.

Read about the Senator's new insights below.

Rand Paul: It's Irresponsible of Obama To Talk About Default That's My Job!

Or, it used to be his job, anyway. But, here's the "Luke, I am your father" level of revelation about what Rand Paul really thinks about the current level of debt service.

There's no reason for us to default. We bring in $250 billion in taxes every month. Our interest payment is $20 billion. Tell me why we would ever default,"
But Senator Paul,  I thought the deficit and the interest payments were bringing us to the brink of default and bankruptcy everyday and that the grandchildren (sob!) would be reduced to boiling their shoes for dinner in the future. Now you seem absolutely blase about the interest on our debt.

And the example - I know that Republicans are always using my household expenses to help my simple mind understand the complex world of high finance and government spending, so I will do the same:

Senator Paul seemed to be telling me that it was like I paid 8% of my take home pay towards my credit card. Using the government figures that Paul uses, a household equivalent would be I bring home $2500 a month and my credit card bill is $200.

You know, I have to agree with Senator Paul - that sounds kind of reasonable to me. At the very least it doesn't sound like the kind of figure that would make me run out into the streets and snatch an apple from a kid in Headstart so I could have something to eat. It doesn't sound like the kind of figure that would make me unplug my father from his lung machine in order to save on electricity.

So Rand Paul is confusing me. On the one hand he is telling me that we can easily afford our debt service, and on the other hand HE is running around seizing food stamps, closing down Headstart and denying treatment to the ill.

He's making me feel like if we can afford our debt service as easily as he maintains then he is just doing that other stuff to be mean.

So, if we digest the lessons Rand Paul is telling us, we can afford to raise the debt ceiling, there is no real reason to go into a default and it's also kind of fun to hurt people in the meantime.

Taking that one step further, the Tea Party and Deficit hysteria don't exist for any real financial purpose, they exist solely to indulge the inner sadist of some people under the guise of fiscal responsibility.

Thanks Rand, lesson taken.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
