Yesterday a child came out to wonder

The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

On a morning walk I was admiring my neighbor's purple passion vine flowers.
When I noticed there were spiked, orange and black caterpillars chomping on the leaves of the vine.
After seeing their numbers were sufficiently high, I decided to take one home to see if I could photo document it morphing into a chrysalis.
I placed it in a container with a stick and plenty of passion vine leaves to munch on. And I watched. And I waited.

It morphed.
I was able to photograph the change from caterpillar to chrysalis and made a slide show.

A beautiful Gulf Fritillary Butterfly emerged.

I was at a local nursery and spotted a passion vine plant. I splurged and bought it. This one was red. I placed the plant just outside the back porch where I had released the butterfly almost a month earlier.

A Gulf Fritillary Butterfly was flying around the red passion vine. I don't know for sure if it was the same one but I would like to think so. As I watched it circling the plant my eyes grew wide and a smile stretched out across my face when I saw her lay a tiny golden egg.
Then, as if she had asked me where I would like her to lay another for a perfect picture, she deposited one right in the middle of a curly loop or circle if you will.
Now I had witnessed first hand each of the four stages in the butterfly's life cycle. After learning about this process as a child and sharing it with hundreds of children through the years, it was a special treat for me.
And promises of someday make his dreams
