TED CRUZ: "I move for no man!"
The Houston Chronicle un-endorses Ted Cruz — a year later

The Houston Chronicle newspaper’s editorial board endorsed Ted Cruz for Senate in 2012 general election. But now, it’s having second thoughts about its decision.
“Does anyone else miss Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison? .... One reason we particularly believe that Hutchison would make a difference in these hectic days is that if she had kept her seat, Cruz would not be in the Senate. When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation – that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator. Obviously, he has not done so. Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution.
TO WHICH TED REPLIES: "Tis but a scratch!"
Yes, Ted Cruz Just Joined The Surrender Caucus
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) spoke with reporters today and said he will not delay the emerging bipartisan Senate deal to reopen the government and raise the debt limit. He's surrendering. As someone who doesn't want an economic crisis, I'm pleased. But I find this action hard to square with Cruz's own rhetoric against the "surrender caucus."

If Ted Cruz didn’t exist, Democrats would have to invent him

A true cynic about American politics would, at this point, be forced to one conclusion: Sen. Ted Cruz is a Democratic sleeper agent.
It is tough to appreciate just how much good Ted Cruz has done the Democrats over these last few weeks.
- He convinced Republicans to shut down the government rather than wait and fight over the debt ceiling, where they would have had more -- and more dangerous -- leverage.
- He splintered the Republican Party such that, from day one, it was clear that the GOP leadership opposed the strategy they were executing, and GOP senators were publicly blasting House Republicans. That also cut the GOP's leverage.
- He made this a fight over defunding Obamacare, which polls showed was a wildly unpopular reason to shut down the government, and which united Democrats against him.

Ted Cruz Admits Budget Standoff Was All About Building Fundraising Lists
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) conceded on Wednesday that he would not hold up a vote on an emerging Senate deal to re-open the federal government and avert federal default, but admitted that the three-week long budget standoff — which began with his 21-hour speech on the Senate floor — was nothing more than an effort to build up his fundraising list.
“My focus is, I think, where the American people’s focus is, which is what are we doing to provide real relief to the people who are hurting because of Obamacare and today,” Cruz told reporters after meeting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), before reiterating his commitment to repealing the health care law.

Ted Cruz is Doing the Right Thing

Some conservatives are complaining that Ted Cruz will not filibuster the debt ceiling increase in the Senate. He is doing the right thing ... The debt ceiling will be raised whether Cruz filibusters or not. It was not worth giving the media another bullet to use against Cruz in this fight. Nor was it worth giving Senate Republicans the talking points they need to convince those on the fringes of paying attention that someone Ted Cruz could singlehandedly cause the nation to default.
This was a smart tactically play by Cruz.
As Cruz has said repeatedly, the burden of this fight is on House conservatives. We have all known that to be true. Cruz is going to be attacked enough by his fellow Senators and outside GOP interests tied to K Street. Conservatives need not attack him for refusing to give the other side more bullets to use against him.
