First, there's an excellent diary about the current Douglas County School Board situation written by badkitties over here. Go read it, and come back. I'll wait.
Okay. This particular off-year election has another school-related amendment as well as our county school board. Amendment 66 will earmark a state-wide tax increase, with the money earmarked for classroom programs (link to .pdf). Every school board in the state, except one, supports this amendment. Guess who's the holdout.
That's right! Douglas County. Our school board opposed Amendment 66 formally at their October 1 meeting. Apparently, their logic is "the elite like us shouldn't pay for the rest of the state. Let them eat cake".
From the perspective of at least 2 taxpayers, we're very happy to pay more when we know where the money is going. I've been asked to pay higher taxes for things that weren't this important. I hope to hell this passes.
