I had a "different" kind of Senior class; we cancelled our prom and had just a regular dance, spending the decoration money on a really good Led Zeppelin cover band called "Bible" and the dress, tux and limo money on a fine (bring a sleeping bag) after-party. So I went with either nobody or everybody!
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Ok, we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

But... before we went all counter culture, there were other traditional proms at our school. Mine were memorable because I went to all three, sewed my own dresses and had a good time dining and dancing with my long term steady. Senior class however, only had one steady couple, and we just couldn't see holding a dance for the two of them!
We were protesting against the war and for the farm workers, learning to make our own granola, playing anti-war songs in the lavatory (great acoustics!) and hiding in the yearbook room for a smoke. We were listening to the Dead, Janis, CSN (& Y), Byrds, Poco, and Country Joe, live and on vinyl. We missed Woodstock because we didn't yet have night licenses or cars. We paid attention in Chemistry class.
I got dragged into the principal's office because somebody had broken into my locker and left a whole stack of underground newspapers in it. I had never given out my combination, I didn't know who would do such a thing! I just set them on the floor next to my locker and moved on. Chaos! Still trying to find out who did that at the class reunions.
One office lady came running after a friend because she thought he had accidentally dropped the papers they gave him when he registered for the draft into the wastebasket on his way out of the office. He carefully accepted them from her and went back and placed them in the trash again. Oh.
So, we were not really "prom" people. We were thinkers and activists, not decorators. We didn't date, we met as a group after events to relax. At our non-prom we sat on blankets in front of the band, and drank the coffee we had brought with us in thermal bottles, wearing jeans and flannel shirts, and kicking off our boots. You can't slow dance to Led Zeppelin tunes that well anyway.
So, going to the prom with my whole class makes it seem like I didn't really have one.
What do you remember about "the big dance" ?
