It's Election Night in many states across the country, and we're liveblogging the results of races large and small. The biggest contests are for governor in New Jersey and Virginia and mayor in New York City, but there are many other hotly contested elections that are up for grabs, including attorney general and the state House of Delegates in Virginia; a key state Senate seat in Washington; and mayoral races in Boston, Seattle, and many other cities.
Results: New Jersey | New York | Virginia
7:04 PM PT (Darth Jeff): In Houston Mayor Annise Parker looks set to keep her job. With 35% reporting she leads with 56.7 percent, more than the 50 percent she needs to avert a runoff.
7:04 PM PT: The AP has called VA-Gov for Democrat Terry McAuliffe, who wins in an unexpected squeaker. His lead is currently around 1.5%.
7:09 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Detroit has 56 percent reporting and Duggan continues to lead Napoleon 53-47 in his quest to be the city's new mayor.
7:12 PM PT (Darth Jeff): The Detroit Free Press has called the race for Duggan. Will become the city's first white mayor since 1974.
7:17 PM PT: 98% now reporting. McAuliffe up 1.6%, Herring down 0.9% in AG's race.
7:18 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Two former Pennsylvania members of Congress are having a good night. In York County former Republican Rep. Todd Platts is leading 56-44 for a judgeship. Weirdly, Platts retired from his safe house seat in 2012 then almost immediately began running for judge.
In Erie County, former Democratic Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper is leading 59-40 to become the new county executive. Dahlkemper served one term in the House before being swept out in the 201o Republican wave.
7:19 PM PT: In the AL-01 GOP runoff, Bradley Byrne is leading Dean Young 52-48 with 71% reporting.
7:20 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Virginia's legislative races are taking on a definite theme, and that theme is narrow defeats and heartbreak for the Democrats. One of their few triumphs of the night (HD-33) turned out to be a math error by the SBOE. When fixed, it gave Republican Dave LaRock an apparent eleven point victory. Democrats lead in just three GOP-held seats (HD-02, HD-87, and HD-93). The frustration. Republicans lead with 52 percent of the vote or less in...wait for it...six different seats. One of those, sadly, is a DK-endorsed candidate. With all precincts reporting, Democrat Rob Farinholt has apparently just missed knocking off Del. David Yancey (51-49).
7:23 PM PT (Laura Clawson): The liveblog continues here.
7:23 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Not having a good night is Democratic Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan, who just lost his race for Northampton County Executive. Callahan was unsuccessful recruited to run for the House against Republican Congressman Charlie Dent, and had the spectacular misfortune of picking 2010 to finally run. Despite being initially highly touted, Callahan came nowhere near unseating Dent.
