It's Election Night in many states across the country, and we're liveblogging the results of races large and small. The biggest contests are for governor in New Jersey and Virginia and mayor in New York City, but there are many other hotly contested elections that are up for grabs, including attorney general and the state House of Delegates in Virginia; a key state Senate seat in Washington; and mayoral races in Boston, Seattle, and many other cities.

Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:06 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Eleven conservative northern Colorado counties voted whether or not to consider seceding and forming a 51st state. It appears the vote to secede has passed in eight, with Weld, Moffat, and Logan voting no. In practice this vote is just for show: both the Colorado legislature and Congress would need to approve a new state, which just isn't going to happen.
Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:17 PM PT (Darth Jeff): A correction on Colorado. It appears secession was more unpopular than that. Phillips, Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, and Washington vote to leave. Elbert, Weld, Sedgwick, Lincoln, Logan, and Moffet vote to stay. Makes five secessions, six unionists.
Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:18 PM PT (David Jarman): Although the GMO-labeling initiative is failing, there's one environment-related piece of good news out of Washington state: all 4 of the candidates of the environmentalist slate are leading in the Whatcom County Council races. (The key issue in these races in this small county is whether to permit a large terminal for exporting coal to China.)
Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:44 PM PT (David Jarman): It looks like the Seattle mayoral race (where Ed Murray leads Mike McGinn 56-43) and basically all the other Washington races are going to stay frozen in place until tomorrow, when there's another drop of ballots. (Washington, which uses mail-in ballots and will count anything that's postmarked as of Election Day, takes a notoriously long time to count.) One other interesting tidbit from Washington, though: in the most hotly-contested Seattle city council race, a capital-S Socialist, Kshama Sawant, is actually coming close to defeating incumbent Richard Conlin, 54-46.
Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:49 PM PT (Darth Jeff): Here's a rundown on the unresolved races. In Virginia, the AG race remains a cliffhanger. In House districts 86 and 87, Republican incumbents Tom Rust and David Ramadan have small leads.
In New Jersey's 14th Senate district, Dem Linda Greenstein holds a small edge. In the Assembly Dem incumbent Daniel Benson narrowly leads; in district 38 it looks like any combination of the two Dems and two GOPers could come out on top.
In Washington's 26th Senate district Republican Jan Angel leads Democratic appointed-incumbent Nathan Schlicher 51.4-48.6. Seattle looks like a Murray win, and Minneapolis looks all but certain to elect Hodges.
Tue Nov 05, 2013 at 9:57 PM PT (Darth Jeff): It doesn't look like any of these races are going to be decided until tomorrow at the earliest. Check back at Daily Kos Elections in the coming days as we give you the rundown on how things stand. Until then, we're calling it a night on this crazy election evening: thanks for hanging out with us!
