I've spent much of the preceding week trying to come up with a theme for my Saturday night shuffle. As I write this, it's Friday, and nothing is particularly moving me either emotionally or musically. Kind of a "dead zone", if you will. When I hit this kind of a rut, I know it's time for me to a) expand my horizons a bit, and explore something out of the ordinary for me, or b) load up on xanax and go to bed.
Let's split the difference tonight.
A piece of EDM caught my ear earlier this week, and believe me, as a musical geezer I'm not generally an EDM aficionado. Daft Punk just ain't my style. But this piece from DJ Tim Bergling, aka Avicci (with a lot of help from his friends) is, IMO, beyond EDM. Yeah, it's great dance music, but there's more to it. It's not just dubs. This is something original, and omg, I could play this at full volume over and over and over (which, I suppose, is the point of EDM)...
Alright. Let's get away from anonymous-random-sex-in-the-club-bathroom music for a minute. The following song hit the $0.69 rack at iTunes earlier this week, and after a preview, I bought the track. While Tony Joe White has long been a staple of true, blues-inspired cajun rock soul-fusion zydeco (how the hell did I manage to fit all of that in one sentence?), he's always been a niche kind of musician. And I like his niche (think Little Feat / Lowell George / Dr. John):
By mid-week, I was really stretching to get to my quota of four videos. Then, tonight, inspiration struck from the far edges of my own personal universe when The Cure came up in the shuffle. Let's just say I was transported somewhere I hadn't been in awhile. That wasn't a bad thing, given where my head was today.
And, since I seem to be dabbling in both geezerly angst and punk tonight, how could I complete the trip without a little personal "come to Jesus" moment?
When I get funked up in my brain, my musical tastes tend to wander, whether I'm looking for an exit strategy from the hell hole or a sound track to justify and accompany my foul mood. So, what's spinning on your platter or swirling in your head or maddeningly ear-worming its way into the very fiber of your existence tonight?
It's all good. Tomorrow's another day.
