Received this e-mail today from Former Governor Howard Dean (D. VT) regarding the upcoming recount in Virginia:
It’s not very often that the former governors from Mississippi and Vermont get an opportunity to work together. But what’s happening in Virginia right now is an extraordinary situation requiring an extraordinary response.
In the closest statewide election in modern Virginia history, Mark Herring, the Democratic Party candidate for Attorney General, currently holds a 164-vote edge over his right-wing opponent. And that Tea Party opponent, Mark Obenshain, is planning to call for a recount so his lawyers can get as many Democratic votes tossed out as possible.
The stakes couldn't be higher. Mark Obenshain is a Tea Party clone of Ken Cuccinelli, the current Attorney General who has been pushing his gubernatorial campaign supporters to fund Obenshain's recount fight in the aftermath of his failed campaign.
Remember the Florida recount in 2000? We can’t let it happen again. Please contribute now to stand with Mark Herring so that every vote is counted fairly.

Both Democracy for America and the Southern Progress Action Fund are teaming up to help Herring because we know that -- if Obenshain somehow wins this recount -- Republicans will stop at nothing to push his radical-right agenda, just as Cuccinelli has done.
As a state senator, Obenshain voted to restrict voter ID laws and worked to roll back women’s rights – including introducing a bill that would require women to report miscarriages to the authorities.
In contrast, Mark Herring doesn’t believe that a politician’s place is between a woman and her doctor. As a state senator, he has been a strong advocate, working to help women gain access to affordable health care.
That’s why we need your help to stand with Mark Herring and ensure every vote is counted fairly. Please contribute now.

When Mark Herring’s victory becomes official, Democrats will hold all five statewide offices in Virginia -- which hasn’t happened in this once-red state since 1969. More importantly, of course, Herring’s victory will send yet another strong message to Republicans that Americans are tired of Tea Party extremism.
Thank you for joining us in this critical moment.
