For the past week I have been doing nothing but working and trying to drum up disaster relief aid for the Philippines. Little did I know that - as someone who cares greatly about addressing man-made Global Warming and who frequently discusses the issue - I am just using that as "an excuse not to give to poor people", according to Faux News' Dana Perino.
On the November 14 edition of Fox News' The Five, co-host Dana Perino attacked environmentalists who express concern that manmade global warming could impact the strength of major storms like the super typhoon that devastated the Philippines. Perino argued that discussing global warming "is the perfect excuse not to do anything for people living in the Third World." Perino later doubled down, saying, "it's an excuse to not help people in poverty."

Perino then goes on to give the mindbogglingly dumb advice that the Philippines should be using more fossil fuels. Anyone who has actually visited the Philippines and has actually taken the time to understand the energy supply situation there knows that fossil fuel generated electricity is very expensive there because the Philippines is an island nation that has few fossil fuel resources and it is expensive for the Philippines to import fossil fuels. Renewable energy, on the other hand, is, by far, the least expensive option for energy production in the Philippines because the country has excellent solar, hydro, geothermal, and wind resources. Unlike you, Dana, we also know that warmer oceans increase the risk of stronger tropical storms and thus increase the risk of continually worse natural disasters like the one currently taking place in the Philippines.
As for Dana's twisted opinion that people who discuss Global Warming are trying to use it as an excuse not to give to poor people...you know what, Dana?... you should go flush your dishonest, ignorant, twisted opinions and blathering down the toilet. I can guarantee you that the people who care about Global Warming are donating a far greater percentage of their disposable income to the poor than you are, and all the people whom I know who are donating to Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts in the Philippines also are people who care about stopping Global Warming because they don't want disasters like this to get ever greater. So, while you sit there, smugly laughing and patting yourself on the back along with your fellow pseudo-compassionate conservatives, compassionate liberals actually are making a positive difference in the world instead of blathering like idiots in service to Big Oil and Big Fossil masters on Faux News. And, while you sit there and prove yourself to be utterly useless in making this world a better place, our compassionate President has ordered the largest ever U.S. relief operation in the Pacific.

For all the compassionate DailyKos liberals and progressives who want to give more to help with critical relief efforts in the Philippines or who have not yet had the opportunity to do so, here are some suggestions for relief organizations on the ground to donate to:
Gawad Kalinga - http://gk-usa.org/...
They are a grassroots organization that offers options for donating specifically for earthquake and typhoon relief efforts and offer both credit card and PayPal as donation payment options.
The Philippine Red Cross - http://www.redcross.org.ph/...
They accept credit cards, PayPal, and other donation methods
Brooklynliberal's diary provides more donation options, including a spontaneous local effort in Cebu.
Please give, if you can. A donation of just 5 dollars will provide enough food and water to help a Filipino family of 4 to 5 survive for five days and every bit helps as the Filipino people face the largest natural disaster that they have ever had to deal with.
