So since we own a business - we can either go SHOP for businesses or go as individuals. I completed the SHOP application with no problem. Somebody will be contacting us. Cool!!!

Then I tried to complete the individual application. We want to compare both before making a decision.

The problems started when I began to enter myself as a household member. I am a Permanent Resident Alien. A "green card" holder. So I answered the question about being a citizen/naturalized citizen as no. So it pops up another selection box where you indicate on which type of document you are in the country on. I selected I-551.

It wants my alien number - no problemo. I got my "green card" sitting right in front of me. Then it wants a document expiration date. OOPS! Mine is old - it DOES NOT EXPIRE!

Then it wants a card number - Sorry, my green card does not have a card number either.

The site wants a 9 character alphanumeric alien # - mine is 9 digits.

Now I have purchased mortgages and found employment with this green card. It is perfectly a-ok.

So I fired up the chat line typed in that I was having issues with entering info about my I-551 and detailed the problems.... and waited.... ohhh I'm number 14...... and waited... and waited.... about 30 minutes later, I'm number 1! woohoo! No shit sherlock, my husband is sitting next to me and we get.......a message stating that my request had been cancelled and click here to get an email response. So I clicked, sure send me an email. This is what I got...

Follow me across the orange squiggle of glitch

Just prior to getting the message that my chat request was cancelled, the DH and I were laughing and joking that the chat folks are probably looking at it and drawing straws as to who was going to take this gawdawful down in the weeds question.

Obviously, nobody thought about the fact that there are some folks out there with OLD green cards issued when they were actually green and did not expire. Mine isn't green it's a funky pink and blue thing. But the bottom line is - my green card is not recent and does not conform with what the website wants. I had figured that somebody would tell me that I would have to fill out a paper application and make copies of my green card - just like every time I have applied for a mortgage.

Sure the hell didn't expect to get kicked to the curb and then the double insult of not even being able to get a email reply.

And for anybody that wants to suggest that I just trip on down to ICE and get me a new green card - It takes months and is a HUGE hassle. Not to mention costs monies. My last experience getting a green card - (this one was issued in 1988) back when it was called the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) led me to start calling it the Insolent and Nasty Service that is how bad the experience was.

Hopefully, somebody from covered ca will see this. I guess I will print an application tomorrow and document why when I mail it in.

Oh, and for you folks following the mrgoo - he's getting around better and better. He just cooked dinner! woohoo! The bills for his broken back have started rolling in. That will be it's own diary for sure.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Have you called them? (12+ / 0-)

I've had trouble navigating through the Covered CA web form as well. Speaking to them has helped. There's a bit of a wait, but not as bad as EDD or DMV.

    •  No. This happened just minutes before I wrote (12+ / 0-)

the diary. I will call Monday and see if that helps.

I just think it is a scenario that they didn't think about or did not have time to address. I really do not have a problem with the glitch itself. What pisses me off is the horribly poor rotten customer service of cancelling my request and sending me into a black hole.

That is what is totally unacceptable to me from a customer service standpoint. If a chat line agent came on and said - we don't know how to answer this, I will send it up the foodchain and have somebody get back to you. That would have been an acceptable answer.

they didn't want to answer it. It happens sometimes, just like sometimes you sit on hold for the next representative, and then you lose your cell signal, or someone beeps in on call waiting, or any myriad of things that can happen.  Chances are pretty good the chat program they are using isn't even programmed by them, it's a module from a software company that created a support management program that they've purchased and integrated into the web page.

NO to citizen, I tried the citizen/naturalized citizen route. That opened a box that started with my alien # and I figured that was where I would enter my I-551 info. But it wasn't and I got confused and did the chat thing. Waited about 30 minutes and got talking to a gal who said just say NO to being a citizen but I had a customer show up at the store so I had to kill the chat with her before trying the NO I'm not a citizen route. And when I entered chat the 1st time I was 17th in line. I dunno, maybe you are right but it should say something nicer than Request Cancelled! At least twitter tells ya - we did something wrong - please try again!

    •  LOL! I waited months for my new green card after (9+ / 0-)

I moved to CA. Finally! I get the envelope in the mail. Open it up and I'm looking at a green card for some older hispanic guy. Not my picture, not my name but sure as hell, they mailed it to my house.

I'm like WTF! So I called the regular number in Sacramento. Got totally blown off. So then I called the fraud number. Tried to explain that I received another persons green card in the mail. Falling on deaf ears. I finally started screaming into the phone, I'm a 28yr old white Canadian chick and this green card you mailed me is a 50 something Mexican guy!!!!  Shrieking hysterically sometimes works. So I was given an address to mail the guys green card to. So I did. And about 6 weeks later my green card showed up in the mail.

If I never have to set foot into an INS/ICE office again I will be happy.

but I sure the hell do not look at 53 like I did at 28. sigh. I remember getting my first photo one, I was 14. My previous card was green w/no photo. My folks were living in the states prior to me being born. I was born in Canada because they did not have health insurance in the USA. Mom's water broke and they jumped in the car and drove to Windsor. I emigrated when I was 3 days old!

So this makes it all the more ironic.

6 times to register my partner on Covered CA.  Every single time I get to where I need to put in our ZIP code and it says that I need to enter a California ZIP.   I called the help line after the first try a number of weeks ago.  She chuckled at the problem and said they were working on fixing it and offered to take an application over the phone.  I declined and said I'd wait until it was fixed and apply on-line, but after several weeks of my ZIP code not working I guess that's the only alternative.

I'm all for the ACA, but even in California the website seems ridiculously inadequate.

is Solano County but we actually reside in Sacramento County. The early calculator did not take that into account but as I was going through today it would ask Sacramento or Solano. So that part is working for me.

Seems they may have done a ZIP code fix, though my ZIP is wholly in LA County and has around 30,000 people so not sure why it should have been a problem to begin with.

A month ago, I could get through, no problemo.

      Now, it's stuck.

I'll give it another few weeks. I'm not a patient person. I try about 3 times and I either stop and give up for a few weeks. or I toss the computer out the window.

I'm really surprised that California's numbers are as good as they are because I found the Covered CA site to be a nightmare to use. I've signed up, but I'm not officially enrolled yet because I now have to go get a copy of my birth certificate to prove that I'm eligible to buy insurance on the exchange. I'm not even getting a subsidy. I just want to buy and mail my check in.

I also made the mistake of saying that I was a "naturalized citizen" my first time through without realizing that it meant that I was born elsewhere. I was born in San Jose. Ok, so I tried correcting that, but it wouldn't let me off the hook. Because I changed that answer, it triggered a review question that asked me to explain why my citizenship status changed and why it changed. "I made a mistake on the form" was not an option and it wanted to know the specific date that I gained citizenship.

I was going to put down my birthdate, but instead I just started over with a new account. I was hoping that maybe with a new account it would recognize my social security number. Nope. It still wants a birth certificate.

nothing (brokers get paid by the insurance companies) and it will be a lot easier than trying to figure out how to make your info conform to what the website wants.

I heard a presentation at my union the other night that convinced me to get help from a broker who knows all the ins and outs and has experience navigating them. As someone whose income fluctuates, when I sign up after Thanksgiving, I will definitely file a paper application through a broker. I bet you can find one who knows how to enroll people with old green cards.

If for some crazy reason you strike out finding a broker who can help you, you might call the Governor's office or your Congressperson (if s/he is a Democrat) for help. I'm sure you're not the only person with an old green card problem. All you need to do is find the person who knows how to deal with it. Someone on your rep's staff or Jerry Brown's staff is likely to know who that is.

    Good luck!

I've been buying my insurance from a good agency for years and I've got an appointment set up next week.

A good agent can also help you decide if an Individual Family plan or a SHOP is best for you.

There are 6,000 certified licensed agents in CA to help.

  •  Apparently no one thought about dialup users (0+ / 0-)

either.  The site won't download past the first page.
Considering how many people in CA are still on dialup, particularly some of the very same people CoveredCA wants to target, you'd think that whoever was in charge of setting up the website would have provided some easier access (besides the 1-800 # that's only open certain hours of the day.)
