Well, just when you think that the tension could not get higher....
The BBC throws another hand grenade into the 50th Anniversary goldfish bowl ! The short clip shown above gives tantalizing glimpses of the 50th Anniversary show. Once again, the Eleventh Doctor shows his obsession with the strange headgear previously favored by Sidney Greenstreet in 'Casablanca', and the late, great comedian Tommy Cooper (see my previous diary on Cooper) - yes, we are talking about the fez! By the way, it might be a nod to the South Wales area, in that Tommy Cooper, who almost always wore a fez on stage, was born in the Mid Glamorgan town of Caerphilly about 25 miles away from the area where most of Doctor Who is based.
I enjoyed the scene in the museum immensely, and can see some great possibilities. The wormhole which transports first the fez, than the Doctor, is a logical way to 'unite' No. 10 and 11 in the woodland, leading to a dispute over the fez. If the earlier clips are correct, this woodland venue is where they meet John Hurt's particular incarnation of their past selves.
All in all, this is an excellent piece. Oh, and if anyone is wondering, 'Children in Need' is the annual BBC telethon (held on 15th November, 2013) and featured a star-studded cast PLUS the mascot, Pudsey the Teddy Bear. It has become customary to feature a short Doctor Who segment each year - this year's was, of course, rather special ! A total of £31 millon Sterling (equal to around $49,838,000) was raised for children's charities.
