This is the response I got from my HRC generated email urging my Republican congressman to vote to pass ENDA.
Dear Ms......
Thank you very mu ch for contacting me about the Employ ment Non-Discrimination Act of 2013, or ENDA. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
As you may be aware, this legislation (H.R. 1755) was introduced by Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) on April 25, 2013 . This legislation would seek to expand current prohibitions against workforce discrimination to include an individual's actual or perceived sexual orientation. This legislation was referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor, House Committee on House Administration, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the House Judiciary Committee. No further action has been taken.
While ENDA seeks to prohibit employers from discriminating against an individual because of an individual's actual or perceived sexual orientation, the term "perceived" is not defined anywhere within the legislation, which raised significant concerns. I believe that all Americans should be treated with the dignity and respect and work place decisions need to be based on work related factors, not characteristics. I strongly believe in the worth of each individual. Every person is entitled to basic human rights under the law. This is the guiding principle established in our Constitution, and I continue to support it. Please know that if this legislation is brought to the House floor for a vote, that I will keep your comments in mind.
Again, I appreciate your thoughts and concerns. It is an honor to serve as your United States Congressman. Your suggestions are always welcome, and if ever I may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
