Hundreds will tell Obama, Pelosi and Reid to Flush the TPP

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – On Monday, November 25, several hundred people will be the first to take the public protests of the secret trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) directly to the President, the Senate Majority Leader and the House Minority Leader when they come to town for two high dollar Democratic Party fundraisers.

The protest will take place from 3-6 pm at Will Rogers Memorial Park, 9650 Sunset Blvd. (at Canon and Beverly Drives), Beverly Hills, 90210.

Grassroots activists, concerned citizens and members of civil society organizations will listen to speakers from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Organic Consumers Association, Citizens Trade Coalition, Health Care for All and the Communications Workers of America and then march towards the site of the fundraisers.

The exciting visuals for the protest will include a 8 foot long train with corporate logos on train cars and Obama as conductor, a 30 x 10 banner that says Stop the TPP: Corporate Coup Against People & Planet, and Overpass Light Brigade: people holding lighted letters saying STOP THE TPP.

BACKGROUND: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a global trade agreement being secretly negotiated by 600 multinational corporations and industry trade groups, will impact nearly every aspect of Americans’ lives. If passed, it will undermine state, local and federal laws, including those governing food safety, environmental protection, internet freedom, worker rights, democratic sovereignty, healthcare and drug prices, and banking and finance regulation.

In short, it will be a disaster for public health and safety, future sustainability of the world’s food supply and basic democratic principles. It has been called NAFTA on steroids.

While 600 corporate executives have access to the text of the agreement, only one member of Congress has seen it and no members of the media. According to Senator Elizabeth Warren, “Wall Street, pharmaceuticals, telecom, big polluters and outsourcers are all salivating at the chance to rig upcoming trade deals in their favor. … I’ve heard people actually say that they have to be secret because if the American people knew what was going on, they would be opposed. … I believe that if people would be opposed to a particular trade agreement, then that trade agreement should not happen.”

The Obama Administration wants to bypass Congress’s Constitutional Authority to pass trade deals using a Nixon-era process called Fast Track which would give them only an up or down vote with no hearings and no amendments.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
