I am on mobile and this just happened.  If I need edits on this diary, I will process them a bit later today.  All done.

We have a 20 something in our life who is just trying to get established.  Jobs have been hard to find and keep and he needs some help along the way.

Not an hour ago, we were having a conversation about the ACA and the Oregon medicaid expansion which he very likely qualifies for.  We were clearing the air on misinformation and I had convinced him to make his calls and get after some insurance, because things can happen.

I leave to run some errands, and I get a call from my wife who took him to the ER just now.

Turns out he left the house and got hit by some woman who said she just could not stay or help him to the doctors after running him over.  His hip and leg hurt, fingernail ripped off, cuts in various places and it appears he hit his head because he is confused.

What a bitch!  I hope he can remember enough to tell the authorities about the hit and run he just experienced.

He isn't covered now.  That ER visit is going to change his just starting life for the worse and all this misinformation and negative obstruction is not just politics.  People have lives and futures on the line here.

I am really angry right now! I think he will be OK, but he won't be financially.  That apartment is a lot farther off now, more nights crashing on couches, doing favors and just healing.  Life is hard enough for people and we don't need to make it harder for them.

Every single signup matters people.  Every conversation to push back on selfish bull shit matters too.  Stand up for this law.  Do your part and let us all push the selfish lies back into the dark where they belong.

Fuck the asses trying to make us fail.  They don't care about anybody but themselves.  The rest of us are out there trying to make this world a bit better and we deserve to win.

We deserve this because life just happens and when it does we all need each other to get through.

UPDATE: 5:30PM  He has no major breaks in his neck and major limbs.  However, they are not sure about his head and face.  The local medical professionals transferred him to a Portland hospital for a night in the ER there and tests.  We think he will just need to heal, but we really won't know until tomorrow.  Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

The local police have interviewed him in hopes of catching the hit 'n run woman who left him on the side of the road to walk back to our place hardly able to speak.  Shit.  Some people are really crappy.

As mentioned in the comments, we may not win.  Our best case scenario is for all of us to unify around the cause, push back on failure advocates and make this stick, then make it better, then make it awesome!

9:36 PM PT: He was just released.  Doctors said he was very lucky to be walking out of the building after being hit the way he was at 30 MPH.

I picked him up and will get things sorted out for the days of rest coming up.

Thanks for the warm thoughts everybody.  The car has been identified as one frequently seen in the neighborhood.  A few of his friends are going to canvas the blocks near the incident.

Turns out the woman was either high, stoned, drunk, or all of the above.  Once he got the right care, he was able to tell us and the police quite a bit more including a great physical description.  Should be some interesting happenings tomorrow.

Mon Nov 25, 2013 at 8:07 PM PT: My son canvassed the neighborhood, found the car and woman and took a photo.

So we are able to close the loop with the authorities.  Now, to find that guy who saw the whole thing and find out what the woman was on, or doing when she botched it so badly to make a hit and run.

The kid is doing well.  Stuff hurts, but he's largely OK and just needs healing.  Great result.  Could have been MUCH worse.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The ACA is all about getting started toward great health care. No turning back. The way forward is through. Every Democrat is married to this law and we all need to work together to make it awesome.

  •  A young friend of ours recently went to the ER (6+ / 0-)

for an unbearable toothache. They prescribed an antibiotic (which he purchased later) and sent him a bill for $2000.  He's paid $200, and I hope he doesn't feel obliged to pay any more.

    This!

I just have one thing to add. We may deserve to win but that doesn't mean we will. It's not enough to deserve something, we also have to fight.

I hope your 20-something feels better soon and I hope he remembers to think long.

  •  We'll win with the ACA. (4+ / 0-)

The federal website is working now, and states like Kentucky and California with their own exchanges have had great success since Oct. 1 For the latest numbers, see ACA Breaks 210K, 925K w/Medicaid.

  •  Young people need the ACA because things (6+ / 0-)

happen to them.  I have know half a dozen young people who have already had cancer.  Broken bones, infections, stitches, appendicitis, car accidents, falls, sports injuries, assaults - all happen to young people. Young people are likely to be sexually active and having babies.

who had a motorcycle accident. She was not at fault. It could have been a lot worse, but she lost some teeth and got her jaw broken among other things.

The $100k she collected from the other driver's insurance company didn't cover her medical and dental bills.

My wife and I lost basically everything when she had to go in to the ER.

11 days on the first stay and eventually about 5 surgeries...

Colon problem that we didn't know about and we didn't know about it because we were uninsured at the time.

This stuff can be really brutal.

      •  I'm pretty sure it still works with the ACA (3+ / 0-)

because I've seen some reference to it while I was looking over the site. But I know it works in general, if your income over the last 3 months wasn't any better than it is now, you may be eligible to turn in the immediate 3 months prior medical bills to be paid.

Now, one caveat is, if the hospital that he's in doesn't participate with Medicaid, that could be a problem, but most do.

        •  This one does. (1+ / 0-)

and will add that if he can at least remember the color and perhaps model of car - and the part of the car that caused the impact he should make sure it is part of the police report.  They do contact body shops on stuff like that.  In Texas, failure to stop and render aid in an injury accident is a felony, with punishment up to 10 years in prison.

Again, I send all best thoughts his way.

    The truth always matters.

This idiotic driver may not have the money nor the insurance to pay. Not having insurance is a pretty common motive in hit and run accidents. (another one is having a suspended license). I sincerely hope this isn't the case for you because it will open a can of worms if it is.

This is yet another reason for universal, "no fault" health insurance.

Just as with the, now illegal (mostly), sleazeball health insurance policies, there is a market in car insurance policies that meet the legal requirements when you register your car but quickly go away after that. Here in glorious Georgia we get adds for them all the time (even on this website, in between the please donate to Sarah and various similar sleazy people).

In any case best wishes and I hope things work out.

    •  This is why he's going to go for medicaid (0+ / 0-)

      as well.

Somebody else mentioned they may pay retroactive.

Oregon does not allow those fade away policies.  No State should.

So, she's either insured, or not, hammered or not, and we found the car and the person and the loop is closed with the police.
