Thanksgiving: A day where families get together, eat turkey, watch football, tell each other what they're thankful for...it's something we all look forward to every year. But over the past few years this day has been overshadowed by an event that corporate entities seem hell bent on making an official holiday: The Black Friday Hunger Games (There, I said it).
I hate Black Friday and the greed, the violence and utter contempt for the American worker this event blatantly champions and represents. You won't catch me in a Wal-Mart or a Target punching out another patron just to get a discount on items that are supposedly 'limited in quantity'. Limited my ass. That's just another lie told by the billionaires and their PR firms just to get the rest of us to kill each other.
Black Friday is the epitome of Jay Gould's disgusting attitude regarding the Middle Class. You know, his whole "I could hire one half of the middle class to kill the other half" bit, except for this scenario, no one has to be hired to do it.
This corporate holiday is one of the reasons I am a Social Democrat. Given how easily and how quickly things can be produced, there's no excuse for this kind of crap. All these things, from TVs to Video Games and other electronic devices, could all be produced here by workers who are paid a living wage and these fat cat businesses would still have lots of money to burn.
Thanksgiving should be a holiday for all workers, and Black Friday should be banned. If you support labor, please don't go shopping on Black Friday.
See you around,
Homer
