Every day is a new day and with that, a new opportunity.
EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC

...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

Ever make a successful comeback?

Ever been brought low? Have the world apparently turned upside down overnight and found yourself at rock bottom? Ever had to rise up and recover from what should've been your ultimate debacle? Ever survive to see another day when others thought you were done?

I think you have. You may not recall right now, but I'm sure you've been knocked flat by life at some point and had to rise like a phoenix, if not on the world stage, then in the more private drama that is your life.

You're here reading now, so I know you have. No one gets through life without a few shots to the teeth, without being sucker-punched by the vicissitudes of fortune, without being let-down or abandoned by someone at some point.

The first time it happened to me it was largely self-inflicted. At 17 I was a street-racing idiotic daredevil who only cared about his car and his girlfriend. Then I got the news my old best friend had died. The world suddenly became a nightmare for me. I fell prey to an emotional vertigo wherein death seemed the supreme truth behind the lie of life. My sense of loss made me angry.

My Seventeen year old brain got so mad I declared war on death. I was going to write-out death. I put myself on a mission. I withdrew from all social contacts and spent years in a intellectually-haunted (by my grandfather) garret above my parents' garage. My grandfather had had 6000 books collected there-and I went through every one of them. I typed out 1000s of pages of the representations of death and reality that I found in those hoaried tomes. Without TV, radio, drugs or spoken conversations I tried to shed all personality traits that I had in the effort to view reality for what it was. Well....

"Lost" in introspection.
I became an expert in sitting in the dark and listening to silence. A couple of years of that seclusion and I was socially inept-and no closer to defeating death. I disdained human contact as a distraction. Yet even in the depth of my late-adolescent and obnoxious hubris I knew I owed something to my parents for the tolerance and support they had showed throughout for their crazy and now-monkish son. At the same time I thought I could never function in society again.

That proved to be just an illusion. I found a menial job to pay my parents back and went to night school. Humans still seemed like odd creatures to me, but I persevered and found myself (via high grades and student loans) at UCB after another 2 years. There, in a truly notorious co-op with 200 other students, I came out of my social isolation with a vengeance. I threw myself into both political activism and love with a frenzy. I was living with ease the social life I had thought both beyond the pale and tempermentally impossible for me just a few years earlier.

To this day, folks that know me are inclined to see me more as a loud-mouthed extrovert (Heh, I still know how to shut my BFM and actually listen)
than a contemplative introvert.

That was my first comeback. It was the first time I ever had to reverse the course of my life. Others have had much much more difficult things to come back from-with much greater hurdles to cross than adolescent hubris and intellectual alienation. What about you? What comebacks have you had to navigate in order to reach today?

DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project, week 5

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!

The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!

Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
