I have no idea who this David Koller is nor do I know what he's thinking.  I'm royalty here and liberals like Koller should know that.
On November 2012, Rep. Richard Nugent was elected by 65% of the votes vs. then-Democratic Challenger David Werder.

Marion County Democratic Headquarters

Here's an article in the Tampa Bay Times about David Koller:

http://www.tampabay.com/...

Koller is the third person and first Democrat to file to challenge Spring Hill Republican Rep. Rich Nugent, who is seeking a third term next year.

He said he has grown increasingly frustrated with the partisan gridlock in national politics.

"I tell my children that if you feel you can effect change for the better, then you have an obligation to do it," the married father of four said Wednesday. "This is a calling."

Additional details about Koller and the kind of candidate he'll be in the 2014 race:

http://www.tampabay.com/...

Koller describes himself as a social progressive and fiscal conservative who would make a jobs bill a priority to improve the nation's schools and infrastructure. He said the tea party's obstructionists have hijacked the Republican Party and that Nugent's voting record on the debt ceiling and the budget have hurt underprivileged people in his district.

"I believe he marches to whatever the tea party wants and not constituents," Koller said. "It's an absolutist point of view."

In a statement, Nugent said he "ran as a conservative, was elected as a conservative, and I vote as a conservative," but is proud of his record working with Democrats to pass legislation on issues ranging from mental health to tax fraud.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

If he were to be elected, he would be my congress critter. I know nothing about him personally. With the last round of gerrymandering, the district extends to his home town of Ocala which is 75 miles away from me.

On his website he says he attended Suffolk County Community College and Springfield University. There's no mention of any degrees attained and the only Springfield University I can find with google is on the Simpsons wiki page.

There appears to be a couple of conflicts in his list of issues. For one, term limits for congress was settled by SCOTUS in 1995.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/...

U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, 514 U.S. 779 (1995),[1] was a case in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that states cannot impose qualifications for prospective members of the U.S. Congress stricter than those specified in the Constitution.
I would think he should know that. So is he looking for a constitutional amendment?

He's all for infrastructure spending but he also wants a balanced budget.

Many of the others are so vague they're meaningless but at least he knows the buzzwords.

As yet I can't say I would vote for him. We've been burned by Tea Partiers with a "D" after their name before.

Not suggesting this is an attack on your views, which I respect.

      1)  David Koller's view on his website states the following:

"Term limits for members of Congress to include a conflict of interest clause."

The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that you cited applies to states, not necessarily rules by federal government.

      2)  What's wrong with infrastructure spending and a balanced budget?  It's not as if Koller is implying he'd do both.

      3)  Did you read on Koller's website that he's for the following:

      Campaign finance reform
      Minimum Wage Increase
      Equality of Marriage
      Reforming Corporate Welfare

These are not views Tea Partiers hold.  Not sure where you're going with your last sentence.  I'd say Koller is exactly what he describes himself:  Fiscal conservative, socially progressive.

      •  I checked the local Democratic Club website (0+ / 0-)

There's no mention of his name.

Just the fact that he went to school with Homer Simpson has me leery and he doesn't claim a degree.

It's been a long, long time since we've had a genuine Democrat running in this district. Karen L. Thurman would qualify. She was defeated in 2002 by Ginny Brown-Waite when she was gerrymandered out of office.

I'll contact our local member of the Democratic Executive Committee and give you an update.

        •  Ok you're WAY over analyzing now (0+ / 0-)

I really don't know where to begin.

          1)  Note that David Koller attended Suffolk County Community College, which is based in Seldon, NY

          2)  Please tell me you're making a joke here when you're referring to Koller's mention of "Springfield University" as the same university that Homer Simpson attended.  You do realize that the words college and university are the SAME thing, right?  Well, Koller may have referred to Springfield College, which is based in Springfield, MA.  I don't know for sure if it's this but that's my guess as when I put in "Springfield University" in Google, "Springfield College pops up."

          3)  I'm assuming the local Democratic club website you're referring to is Marion County Democratic Headquarters website, correct?  If so, I don't see David Koller's name mentioned as well but so what?  Koller lists the event on his Facebook page as being a "monthly meeting" and incidentally, the Marion County Democratic Headquarters doesn't list on the website the event as well.  My guess is that Koller is looking for endorsement from the Marion County Democratic Party.

          4)  Do you have a reservation that David Koller is a genuine Democrat?  He's got progressive views on the issues spelled out all over.  The only way he wouldn't be a genuine Democrat is if he's a sellout to corporate interests:

          •  Calm down already (0+ / 0-)

I don't understand your emotional involvement with this guy.

I said I would check with the Democratic Executive Committee and I will.

I don't think you understand what our experience has been since 2002. We've had people running as Democrats who wanted to eliminate the estate tax, pushing Fair Tax, balancing the budget, and poising with AR-15s. Then there was the flagpole sitter.

We have not had a genuine, viable Democrat since Karen Thurman.

            Welcome to my world.

            •  I have no emotional involvement with Koller (0+ / 0-)

All I'm doing is reporting information based off of David Koller's website, Facebook page, etc.  In fact, my group, Knowledge Democrats, reports information without getting emotionally attached to candidates.  We report diaries and add a bit of humor with motivation to take action without being personally attached.  We've been posting diaries for months, whether it be on Rob Zerban event (posted earlier), a Dave Peiser event (running against Darrell Issa in 2014) or any other Democratic challenger event but our goal is first and foremost:  Promoting the underdog, regardless of how much traction the candidate is our goal.  Call us your outsourced marketing/promotions team, if you will, for the candidates in question for the price of $0.00.

I'm not saying I'm disregarding any further investigation you want to make with the Democratic Executive Committee.  That's not the issue.  In fact, I have no problem if you do so as to be honest (and telling the truth here), I myself only learned about David Koller just today and guess what?  I don't even live in Florida.  I just decided, hell, perhaps it might be nice if someone on Kos reported for the underdog for once instead of talking about "who's likely to win" or "which races should we be involved in."  That's where David Koller fit the equation.

You didn't though answer my question on 3)  Is the Democratic Executive Committee you're referring to the one at Marion County Headquarters?  If not, what is the Democratic Executive Committee?  My guess is that you are referring to Marion County Democratic Party in this case.  Just asked for quick clarification, that's all.

I understand what your experience has been in past Democratic candidates running in your district since 2002.  However, like me, you are also basing all that you know about David Koller from a website which still is a work in progress at this point so there's really no point in analyzing anything further unless you've had the opportunity to see more information via further website updates, see Koller in person, watch a video, etc.  From what I saw, progressive views on the issues were spelled ALL OVER Koller's Issues page.  my impression from your previous comment made me under the impression that you don't believe anything on the website or perhaps you're skeptical.  And that's fine, no problem with that.

But note I have no other information to go by about David Koller other than his website or his Facebook page and from what it seems, you know nothing more about him other than what I do.  So once you get confirmation from the Democratic Executive Committee on Monday's meeting (assuming that's what you're doing), that's the next step of information.

              •  FL-11 is Hernando, Citrus, Marion and Sumter (0+ / 0-)

Counties. As I said, I'm 75 miles from Ocala which is in Marion County. I'm in Hernando County which shouldn't be confused with Hernando, Fl which is in Citrus County. ;-)

                Let's clarify university v. college.

                http://www.diffen.com/...

In general, a college offers education in one specific area, while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you attend one of their colleges, such as the business college or college of engineering.
I'm confident the creators of the Simpson's show, in order to avoid a lawsuit, ensured there was no such thing as Springfield University before they sent Homer to school.

Anyone can call themselves a Democrat and run for office. In past elections when there's a quisling running as a Democrat (and it seems there always is one) and there is no genuine, viable Democratic candidate, there has been discussion of withholding our endorsement or endorsing and working to elect a third party candidate. While that would be a banning offense at Daily Kos, it's perfectly legitimate in the real world. That's life in my local Cook PVI R+8 real world reality based community.

I truly understand your reluctance to vote for someone you do not know nor never heard of. I also completely comprehend that driving 150 miles round trip to meet me is also not a reasonable solution.

I would like to let you know I have been to The Hernando County Democratic Headquarters a couple of times to introduce myself to the people I wish to serve and represent and will continue to do so, in fact  I will be returning to  the Hernando County HQ  again this coming Saturday (12/07/2013)  to have coffee with the democrats that is hosted there every weekend. I hope you take the opportunity to come by allow me to introduce myself to you, answer as many questions as I can for you and have a cup of coffee.

Also I did not go to school with Homer Simpson, I will have the correction of University to College made on my bio as I do not wish to mislead or give out incorrect information.

Thank you for your interest in me and I hope to meet you soon.

Also I would like to thank the dailykos.com for this article and assisting on getting the word out.

              •  Welcome to Daily Kos, David. (0+ / 0-)

I'm disappointed. I was hoping you might be about to bring some star power into the district. Trust me, Homer Simpson would draw attention.

If you could flesh out your website with a page per issue, it would be very helpful. Doing it soon would be good. Doing thoughtfully would be better. I would expect it to evolve.

Let's start with balancing the budget. That puts you firmly on the side of the Senate Republicans.

I'd also like to see a position paper on climate change and another on inequality.

Again, welcome to Daily Kos and I look forward to learning more about your positions.

He gives David Koller enthusiastic support and believes him to be a viable Democratic candidate, at least pending vetting from the state party apparatus.

Steve doesn't know if David has a degree.

I still find it a bit strange that both Mr. Koller and Congressman Nugent (R) consider balancing the budget to be a priority.

I'll make no promises, but I will try to attend the Saturday meeting in Spring Hill. My state of health makes promises problematic.

I've been busy this past weekend so I haven't had a chance to reply to your comments on this diary since we last spoke.

As I've emphasized with this diary, my group and I on Kos are geared on reporting underdog campaigns (even on Twitter) so the more information we get about Koller, either from him, you, Zeledon, etc. that's ultimately helpful.  There just hasn't been much if any press on Koller yet and his website is still not fully informative as of yet.

On balancing the budget, well, although the U.S. deficit continues to go down, the U.S. debt is the greater concern in this issue and you can't address it if balancing the budget doesn't come into play.  If Koller does mention that balancing the budget is an "Issue of Concern," that doesn't necessarily mean it's the top priority over other issues.  Unless Steve Zeledon mentioned information otherwise or if you've heard more about Koller than what's been mentioned on the website, it may be best to hear more from Koller himself on how he would intend to approach balancing the budget.  Perhaps his website will list additional details at some point.

On the other hand, there are many issues Koller is concerned about so I don't think he's listing them in order of importance.  He's probably just making a general list of issues he wants to to talk about in the 2014 campaign and what he may address if he's fortunate to be elected as Congressman.

One thing I will point out is that Koller hasn't mentioned his stance on Social Security.  He does mention "Solvency of Medicare and other public assistance programs to include reform to prevent waste."  Getting rid of waste is good but if you ask me, there's a bit of uncertainty here as to what Koller is saying.

However, Koller does mention he's for reforming corporate welfare so with that, in an ideal situation, additional revenue held offshore to avoid U.S. federal income taxes wouldn't be a possibility anymore.  This would be more revenue the federal government could get in return.

      •  Yes. I'm concerned that his view might be (0+ / 0-)

        "Fix the Debt".

        http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

There has been more recent news I've read, perhaps in relation to Janet Yellen but I'm not sure and I can't find it now, that implies that the "rational actor" in economic models was modeled on the wrong actors. The point being made was that their actor was a wealthy investor and it's the average consumer that has to lead the recovery.

First off, I watched Yellen's confirmation hearing and was pleased to hear how straight forward and understanding she was of the many factors that are being problematic in the U.S. economic recovery being slower than it should be: income inequality for example was something Yellen touched base on and Bernanke hasn't addressed this yet.  Yellen was also mindful of the social safety nets that people less fortunate depend on.

Koller seems to have just recently started his campaign.  I guess it's a matter of wait and see how he clarifies his full stance on Medicare and Social Security.
