How do you think things like delivery drones, driverless cars and electronic currencies will affect your daily life?
Are you an early adapter or more suspicious of new technologies?
Bitcoins and delivery drones have been sparking my imagination recently-- how about you?
Recently a college student raked in $24,000 by waving a sign on ESPN with the bitcoin logo and the code for his mobile wallet, imploring Mom to send money. Sleuths at reddit figured out the digital address for his bitcoin wallet so people could make direct deposits, which turned out quite lucrative for the enterprising student.
While I dream of making unexpected windfalls like this from new technologies, it's even more fun to imagine how they might impact day to day life. How do you think the emergence of digital currencies, electronic wallets and delivery drones might affect your daily lives? Instead of buying and storing items you rarely use, why not just order them, have them delivered by drone, use them once and return them? Wouldn't credit cards virtually disappear over time? Would you feel safe using a mobile wallet? Whose jobs (besides UPS drivers) might get replaced by drones?
I had a dream about how a typical evening might look not too far in the future.....
dream sequence commencing.....
pNut comes home from work and says, Let's go out for sushi tonight. (This is highly improbable, but it's my dream, so back off!) Because it's cheaper than driving our car, I grab my iPad and access the electric driverless car service we use for local errands. The car arrives 10 minutes later from its regular neighborhood patrol and whisks us to our favorite local sushi restaurant. There's not even a nosy cab driver to make meaningless chitchat with.
We sit down in our favorite booth and place our palms down on the table. The built-in touch screen activates, scans our fingerprints, and the face of our favorite waitress Keiko appears beneath the glass tabletop. "Welcome back, John and Colleen," she says pleasantly. "I see you usually like to start with some hot sake. Can I bring you that now?"
"Yes, thank you!" we reply. After a slight pause she says, "I see you always order unagi. Would you like an order of that with your sake while you look over the menu?" Again, we agree.
While we wait we can the observe the sushi chef prepare our order (to reassure us that a real person is indeed in the kitchen back there), surf the internet, or watch TV on our tabletop screen. We watch the chef prepare our unagi nigiri which he then places on a tray along with two sake flasks and cups. The tray is loaded onto the back of a hovering ServerDrone, which then floats out to our table. pNut jokes that maybe they should add a Flying Fish Roll to the menu. We remove our items from the tray and continue to peruse the menu as the drone hovers back to the kitchen. We never do see our favorite waitress in person.
We watch our chef work onscreen, giving him compliments as he prepares our Spider Roll and other goodies, which he sends out to us via the little red and black ServerDrone as they're ready. When we're finished eating I see in the lower right hand corner the We Accept Bitcoins icon. I bring up my mobile wallet on the screen, activate it with the crypto key I had engraved into the band of my ring, pay for the meal with Satoshis (how appropriate!) and tap in my request for a return car.
When our driverless car arrives the meter tells us we are running a bit low on credits. I punch in an invitation for anyone who needs a ride, and the car veers over on the Skyway and we pick up a passenger at the local burger joint, delivering him to about a mile from our house and replenishing our credits in the process.

Ok, that was a bit of a utopian dream. I have dystopian ones, too, mostly involving Google Glass. I'll throw the floor open to you for your own imaginings. What technologies are you eager to try? Which ones do you wish would just go away already? Which ones are just downright frightening?

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!
The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

Organizer tmservo433

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!
Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

Please visit tmservo433's diary for a description of the rest of the attendees which were mostly non-Kossacks, but folks who should be there, such as, State Legislator John Wright. tmservo433 gathered a great group of Progressives and hopefully we can get a few more of them to join us at DKos. Kudos to tmservo433 for reaching out and uniting like-minded folk in Missouri!
