This was a momentous day, with actions across the country in support of low wage workers: people rising up against the insidious forces of hyper-individualism, fighting the selfishness and greed that at times seems to dominate our culture. Not today. The forces of light were strong tonight in NYC with the NYC Light Brigade and citizens, activists, students, workers, Occupiers, marchers, walkers, talkers - all out in force and engaging in this amazing creative action.
Hundreds marched past City Hall and went on to Zuccotti Park, where they gathered and held vigil. It was for workers, for a living wage. For peace, for solidarity. For the forces of community-formation, neighborhood-building, economic fairness.
To quote activist Gan Golan:
Tonight we came together to build our vision for a NYC that works for #allofus. We asked thousands of people to write on tiny lanterns WHAT they were fighting for, and just as importantly, WHO in their lives they were fighting for. They then took their tiny lights, and placed them down in the center of Foley Square. Together, all of our private hopes and aspirations became a collective demand for a new future.
The result was stunning.
And on this day of remembrance as we collectively mourn the global loss of one of the lights of the our times, Nelson Mandela reminds us that it is
always time to stand up for justice.
This is our moment.
All of us.
