Bill Mckibben is a humble guy, but don't let that mild demeanor fool you.
The founder of 350.org is also kossack, and his work to marshall action on climate change is by now legendary.
We once were introduced to Bill Mckibben in front of the Lensic in Santa Fe, NM where he was giving a speech. We were costumed up to look like the female Governor of NM and the female head of the largest utility in an effort to publicize the need for their leadership in powering past coal.
Though obviously dog tired from action outside the Whitehouse leading the civil disobedience which resulted in the arrest of many he had taken the time to stop off to give words of encouragement and solidarity to the cold weather Occupy Santa Fe. He got a giggle out of our costumes and then went in and wowed the crowd gathered together to celebrate local environmental activism and accomplishment. His speech was both thrilling and sobering, and the lengthy standing ovation was very heartening to experience the hundreds pleasant sending this humble guy their love.
Snow on the ground in teh Texas Panhandle.
As we drove up from Austin last night I pinged up a comment to Evening Blues:
Next stop Sweetwater, TX hoping too put Lubbock (13+ / 0-)
Next stop Sweetwater, TX hoping too put Lubbock (13+ / 0-) in our rear view mirror on teh way back to Santa Fe!
Surreal out here in rural TX..... No moon, dark out on the highway, the huge wind turbines blink with tiny red eyes in lines across the dark plain. Skunk smell wells up through the dash..
Stayed up too latenursing a diary so will be glad to get to our cheap hotel and have a glass of wine!
Have a great night all !
Those wind turbine farms keep growing and out here they are very close to the road ad shocking to observe, a mostly positive sign of change.
Later just before we arrived at our budget hotel we stopped to pick up a bottle wine and learned that a freak ice storm has brought down 400 plus power poles west of Sweetwater, another example of extreme weather brought on by climate change?
Now this morning Jakkalbessie is driving us through the dark early morning hours in the TX Panhandle on our way back to Santa Fe . We will be glad to be back after months of photo safari and traveling. She caught me giggling as I read our email and wanted to know what .
There, among the many progressive org newsletter action email alerts was one from Bill. The Hater. Now hold on, don't tase me bro, don't break up your keyboard getting down to hr this diary just yet.
Bill:
Friends,
Here's the annual video where I...ask for money:
www.350.org/donate2013
If you watch it, you'll get to see what my basement looks like.
On we go,
Bill
So f you were able to listen to the vid by now you know why I wrote the title like I did, trying for a little humor playing off Bill saying in the video that he HATES asking for money, saying that many of the people who make up 350.org in countries around the world are poor and he does not want ANYONE to give money that cannot afford to.
So you see that Bill Mckibben's basement is also one of his love for the planet and its people, always evident when you hear him speak.
I wrote this diary in hope you might give Bill and 350.org a little love back.
Our quest to create a better world in the face of climate change is daunting, but we should never give up.
View the vid if you can, give, if you can. Enjoy the bonus of getting to see Bill's Basement. And know that you are contributing to important work. A lot of precious life hangs in the balance.
Thanks for reading and commenting. My apologies if the diary title mislead. :)
More on 350.org plans for 2014 beneath the kossack climate change cloud...
With your help, 350.org can take the passion and creativity of thousands and channel it into real, tangible progress on the climate crisis.
We've got big plans for the year ahead:
Scale out our fossil fuel divestment campaign and directly confront corporate polluters.
Help organize dozens of "Power Shift" trainings around the world to create an international wave of climate action.
Coordinate bold actions to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline and push for clean energy solutions.
Spark our most ambitious global mobilization yet..
.
If you can chip in to support this work, we'll put your donation to good use. Our crew is lean and frugal, and we make every dollar count.
Many thanks in advance!
Check out the 350.org website and view the vids. including the one made last summer with Nelson Mandela thanks.
It may seem impossible, but it will be done. Thank you, Mandela.
Nelson Mandela inspired all of us with his courage, his unyielding resistance, and his grace. Inspired by Mandela’s vision, climate activists from around the world helped make this video last June during the Global Power Shift convergence organized by 350.org.
