Can you help the Help Desk?
Why yes, you can. First you've got to realize what our help desk is and what it isn't.
This is NOT elfling's attitude, but it would be mine.
I've never staffed a help desk
per se. However, from working with the public I have a feeling of deep empathy for anyone who does.
Deeeeeep.
Our Help Desk at DKOS is staffed by a very dedicated and extremely overworked kossack with a great sense of humor. I've met her in person and I know that is true. She cares about being fair and doing the best job she can, but she operates under severe time limitations.
She is not a phantom. I know phantom help desks. Once I spent 45 minutes in a slow-moving line of folks at the Guatemala City airport waiting for my turn at the help desk. When I finally got within a few feet of the help desk I was shocked to see no one was staffing it. On a weekend it may feel that way at our Help Desk, but it is not really true.
A few days ago elfling posted a comment in a help desk thread explaining why moderation is a relatively low-level priority at the help desk.
[Everything in bold below was highlighted by me]
5 Posted by elfling on Dec 11, 2013 @ 10:35 AM
I'll answer this as best I can.
First, helpdesk is not my primary responsibility at DK. There are some days where other issues are higher priority and when I have very little time to address all the issues that come up. This is magnified on Mondays, or heaven forbid, if I take a day off. And my time does not necessarily expand to cover all the queries that come in any given day.
First priority is technical issues, which can be resolved quickly and only by me.
1. Can't login/spam trap/etc
2. Technical issues that may indicate a bug or issue that needs to be addressed by the tech staff.
Second priority is spam/zombie type issues. Again, these are fast to resolve and can be handled only by me.
Third priority is instruction/tutorial help. I am grateful that often other DK users pipe up and direct people to the answer.
Moderation is last. Some of these are forwarded on to the moderation team and some are triaged out because they are obvious (either way). Often to truly understand a situation requires quite a bit of time, and intervening without reading the entire thread does more harm than good. It is often hard to tell what is simple and what is messy from the subject line. Subject lines that look like more straightforward issues are handled first.
I am trying to be better about making sure that all threads that have been examined get some kind of response if anything can be said. (The people who write asking us for help because a shadowy organization is reading their mail and following them tend not to get a reply... and I wish I were joking.) It may help you to realize that only about 1/4 of the messages that come to Help Desk are public - the rest are admin only. So to your eye, I may have handled only a few requests even though I've actually handled quite a bit more.
It's worth knowing that Markos' patience for very complicated pie fights is low (especially this time of year) and when in doubt, if he acts at all, he tends to bring down the hammer on all participants.
My takeaway from her post is: If you use the Help Desk to seek justice against your foes on questions of moderation your post will have the lowest priority of all. One person staffs it, and (despite the multi-tasking abilities of a crazed demon) she is overworked. Searching out convoluted threads in different diaries to find the original sin is a long and tedious process for a disinterested third party...like being a Rescue Ranger on a day when onlly bad diaries are published.
A better way for kossacks to participate at the help desk is to explain procedures and technical glitches to newbies. Several kossacks already do that. Elfling said she appreciates that kind of help.
Third priority is instruction/tutorial help. I am grateful that often other DK users pipe up and direct people to the answer.
this sword will cut everybody/
Note also she mentioned what we all know already, if Kos is forced to intervene the sword he yields will have two sharp edges = one for your opponents and one for you.
It is not a "Yelp" Desk.
There is no "Y" in "Help Desk." It isn't the "Yelp Desk." It isn't the place to post reviews of DKOS. It isn't the place to post, "folks criticizing X are teh stoopid." It isn't the place to post, "folks praising X are teh stoopid." Nor is it the place to post, "we need to both criticize & praise X."
So drop by the Help Desk when you're feeling helpful and pipe up with answers to technical questions. I know elfling would appreciate more help and less sermons. Sermons, even when thinly disguised as questions, belong in diaries and comment sections. Real help, on the other hand, is always welcome and appreciated. That's true even if it is only holding the hand of some innocent newbie accidentally caught in our aggressive spam filters.

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!
The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

Organizer tmservo433

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!
Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

Please visit tmservo433's diary for a description of the rest of the attendees which were mostly non-Kossacks, but folks who should be there, such as, State Legislator John Wright. tmservo433 gathered a great group of Progressives and hopefully we can get a few more of them to join us at DKos. Kudos to tmservo433 for reaching out and uniting like-minded folk in Missouri!
