WJCT in Florida is reporting that the Duval County School Board has unanimously voted to change the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School.
Forrest was a Confederate general, slave trader, and among the founding leaders of the Ku Klux Klan.

This vote occurred after an online petition was created to rename the high school. A new name for the school has yet to be selected.
I think that it is horrible that it took until 2013 to rename the school. A similar effort to rename the school in 2008 failed.
I hope that this school is the last school or public building named after a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. Having children attend school day after day in a building named to honor a member of the Ku Klux Klan sends the wrong message to children, and I am glad that the Duval County School Board has finally done the right thing.
