“Yes, indeed, we are making a very clear statement that we cannot, cannot support a budget agreement that does not include unemployment insurance in the budget or as a sidebar in order to move it all along,” said Nanci Pelosi at a Democrats-only hearing on the uninsured. “It would undermine who we are as a country.”

"We cannot, cannot support a budget agreement that does not include unemployment insurance."

"Cannot, cannot..."

But that's exactly what they did.

Liberal senators -- like Tom Harkin of Iowa -- complained that an unemployment benefit extension was not included in the deal.

"There's over a million people now who cannot find a job, out of work, and right at this time of year their unemployment insurance is being cut off," he told Radio Iowa last week. "It's really unconscionable."

Even a few Republicans could smell the stink of this miserable deal, which also cut benefits for our brave soldiers and their families.
This week, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina was particularly passionate. “Of all the groups in America you would go to and single out [for cuts] …we picked the military community,” he said Tuesday. Do you know how much a master sergeant with 20 years experience makes in retirement? he asked. Answer: less than $25,000 a year. The cut in cost of living (COLA) is the equivalent of giving up three years of retirement pay, he said.

Obama cheered!

"I hope this spirit of cooperation will continue into the New Year as we work to restore opportunity and broad-based growth for every American," Obama said in a statement issued after a final Senate budget vote on Wednesday.
Hurrah for cooperation with the racist anti-government Tea-Baggers?

Yes indeed!

But meanwhile extended unemployment benefits are the absolute last resource of millions of Americans! The next step is homelessness and maybe starvation.

If this isn't a "red line," where the fuck will the Democrats ever draw one?

So let me remind any remaining Democrats who aren't quite ready to flush the New Deal down the toilet...

It's Elizabeth Warren for President 2016, or the Same Old Shit!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I was trying to maintain a tight focus in this diary, so it doesn't sound like just another rant, but you're right that I shouldn't have passed over cuts in benefits for our brave soldiers and their families.

So I'm adding a note about it, and Jesus Fucking Christ!

If even Lindsay Graham is screaming about this thing, how the heck did they pass it?

off the right wing. And I think they did a pretty good job. I say let them go back to their families (their staffs as well). Come back in 2014 refreshed, ready to fight for things like unemployment extension, the minimum wage, etc. We don't need to be like the Tea Party in expecting our reps to win every battle at all costs.

      •  A very tiny fraction of people (0+ / 0-)

are unemployed for an extended period. The rest of us have issues that are important to us as well. The chronically out of work need our help but they are not the only people with needs in the world.

        •  Tiny fraction? (0+ / 0-)
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4.1 million people are counted as long-term unemployed (those who have been out of a job for six months or more).

That number of long-term unemployed is higher than in any month of the Great Recession, which economists say ended in 2009. And it's more than three times the percentage of long-term unemployed in 2007, which was 17.5 percent.
