A while back, Joshua Katz at North Carolina University presented some fascinating maps on regional dialect, based on work done by Bert Vaux for the Harvard Dialect survey. You can take the test yourself at the link, answering not only pronunciation questions but also queries about word choices: What do you call that carbonated beverage you drink? Soda or pop? What about those shoes you put on when undertaking exercise? Sneakers or tennis shoes?
The results—and the resulting maps—were quite interesting.
And now The Atlantic has upped the game, providing an audio map of the results, with people from every region of the United States speaking their diverse parts:
Take the test. Discuss the results. How is that second vowel in "pajamas" properly pronounced, anyway?
