Sophie's Choice is probably one of the greatest tragedies in the history of motion pictures.

Which of her two children will Sophie sacrifice to save the other?

But if you repeat this scene over and over and over, it turns into a farce.

(cf. The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon: "All world historic facts appear twice, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.")

So the Democrats have somehow contrived to make this gruesome situation even more farcical than Marx probably imagined, because instead of actually choosing one child to sacrifice...

They cut off one child's nose and another child's ears and yet another child's fingers in the hope of piling up enough body-parts to satisfy the Wall-Street gods who rule our world.

Remember "Welfare Reform" aka The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996?

Bill Clinton signed that thing!

It didn't abolish AFDC, but at a certain time as determined by the Congressional Republicans, we cut families off the dole and more or less forget them.

You may or may not have already noticed a similar pattern in the Age of Obama, but now we're about to arrive at a cut that's big enough and definite enough to wake up almost anybody who hasn't been paying attention.

This time we're cutting off 1,300,000 Americans, and hundreds of thousands of others who depend on them.

Extended unemployment compensation comes to an end for 1,300,000 American families December 28, 2013, and even the business press can smell the stink of this deal.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, extending federal benefits through 2014 would cost about $25 billion. The actual economic impact of cutting them off would be larger. That’s because the unemployed reliably spend that money, creating a multiplier effect in the economy. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics (MCO), estimates that every dollar of unemployment benefits generates about $1.55 in economic activity. By that measure, ending the payments would cost about $39 billion in spending next year.
But what the heck! The Democrats didn't give away the whole package of unemployment compensation!

They only cut off its legs!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

fucking be kidding me.  Find another fucking simile/metaphor/comparison.  We already know how horrifying cancelling UI benefits are.  You don't need to use a WWII reference which, even utilized fictionally, was real.

Thanks for a stupid fucking Christmas diary.

If you were one of the people losing your fucking income on Saturday. On the other hand, you'd probably be saying "fuck" over and over on a diary celebrating Christmas. Like "What's so fucking good about it when people like me are losing our fucking incomes"? Sorry you got out of your comfort zone.

      Actually, no, I'm fucking not.

at any point because I'm self employed and have been living on the edge for a decade.  I don't qualify for UI.  I have friends who do and we have actually united in letter writing, emailing and phone calling.

        •  This is a life and death issue. (5+ / 0-)

Apparently some stooges for "Third Way" Democrats like Obama are simply too dim-witted to understand or too dishonest to admit that millions of Americans are absolutely up against the wall. These people are already looking at significant cuts in food stamps, and now their last cash payment from anywhere is gone.

This is a life and death issue for millions of Americans, and it disgusts me that so many Obama DINOS are laughing it off with lame-ass distractions.

            Death by Poverty?

The research team, led by Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, chair of Epidemiology, estimated the number of U.S. deaths attributable to social factors using a systematic review of the available literature combined with vital statistics data.

The investigators found that approximately 245,000 deaths in the United States in the year 2000 were attributable to low levels of education, 176,000 to racial segregation, 162,000 to low social support, 133,000 to individual-level poverty, 119,000 to income inequality, and 39,000 to area-level poverty.

Obama himself is bright enough, but his internet stooges can't even understand a simple sentence, much less frame a convincing defense of the nauseating "deal" that throws millions of American families out in the cold.

                •  Good question! (0+ / 0-)

                  Who are Obama's internet stooges?

That's a very good question, and like many other very good questions, there are two distinct and apparently contradictory answers.

                  ..........................................................................

Answer #1. It's obvious who they are!

It's obvious because no matter what Obama does...

                  Incinerate children in Afghanistan!

Make a joke out of mortgage relief for desperate homeowners!

Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) said Obama’s approach to the foreclosure crisis has been "an absolute failure" and predicted it will continue to drag down the economy unless he changes tack.

"For the life of me, I can't figure out why a community organizer who says he cares about families, who says he cares about communities, has just turned his back on one of the biggest problems in America,” said Cardoza, who co-chairs the Democratic Caucus Housing Stabilization Task Force. "The way they get defensive when you point out it's been a failure just underscores to me they don't have a clue about what to do."

                  No excuses from Cardoza!

But no matter what happens, the stooges always drag out the same old excuse...

The Republicans made him do it!

                  .........................................................................

Answer #2: Nobody knows who they are!

...because it's all just a bunch of internet pseudonyms!

The reason it is time to blame the modern DC Democrats is because the GOP never has been the party of the poor, the struggling working class, the disappearing middle class.  From the New Deal through Johnson it was the Democrats who built a modern, more fair, more just America, who started to demand the US live up to its ideals.  Not perfect, a lot was left to do but it was the Dems who started it, and then walked away.  I never expect a GOP pol to talk about poverty, two Americas, etc but I used to expect and hear it from Dems.  No more.  That is why it is fair game to blame the Dems.  Because they do not even discuss it anymore.  Because when they won it all in 2008 they did as little as possible and when they lost the House in 2010 they acted as if they controlled nothing.  Because they offer no alternative message or vision.

        •  You're exactly right IMHO, CTliberalpragmatist. (0+ / 0-)

  •  The Democrats are interested in one thing only (10+ / 0-)

Keeping those big donor dollars flowing. Just like the Republicans are. If that means pretending to "balance the budget" with austerity on the backs of the poor while throwing more and more tax breaks at the rich, (and it always does), then that's what they'll do.

What the use of having an opposition party,Democrats right now, if they let such a tragedy happen to millions of Americans?

I'm done defending the Democratic party when they stray so far from what used to be our mission just to appease the same corporate donors that Republicans have.

Because in the real world, people actually answer very similar questions all the time.

And just to give you a gritty example...

Here you are in prison, and you KNOW that Big Bubba is bigger and stronger than you are.

Does that mean you have to be his bitch?

I'm not saying there's only one answer under all circumstances...

But it creeps me out when "Third Way" Democrats assume that everybody will  AUTOMATICALLY get down on all fours for the Big Bubba Republicans.
