What's the highest density of population of anywhere you've lived?
As you can see, I've actually already asked two questions. Both have to do with the population density of where you live or have lived. Smileycreek sent me this interesting little chart. It shows the size of what one giant city would be if all 6.9 billion people on earth lived in that one ginormous city relative to the size of the USA so as to help Americans be able to relate to the point they are making.
What it shows is how big that one city of 6.9 billion people would be if it had a population density of various big cities. As you can see Houston has much less population density compared to San Francisco which has less population density than Paris.
So, what is the population density of the town or city where you currently live? Do you like it or does it feel like too many people all mushed together? Does it feel like there aren't enough folks nearby? Would you prefer living in a different place than you do now due to the population density? Is it easy for you to travel around or are there traffic jams and long commutes?
Where I currently live in Paradise, CA there are 26,249 people living in an area of 18.322 square miles which means the population density is 1433 per square mile. I like it because it is a rural area yet close to bigger cities. I can drive for 1.5 hours and be in Sacramento and it takes less than 3 hours to drive to San Francisco.
I must admit, I do not miss the rush hour/grid lock traffic of the Bay Area one bit and I do like living on the three acres of land we have with a year-round creek on a dead end road. I love the close proximity to wide open land which is literally all around us. In 20 minutes we can be swimming in our favorite river almost always without another soul to be seen. I can walk out my back door and hike along a trail that starts on our property then goes for miles in open land of tree-covered hills, wild flowers and streams.
I grew up in Denver which has a population of 634,265 (making it the 23rd largest city) in an area of 154.9 square miles for a population density of 4095 per square mile. That's not very dense at all. It's only 2.86 times as dense as where I live now! I always felt Denver was plenty spread out yet without being too spread out like suburbs are usually. There isn't a whole lot of sprawl in Denver proper and as far as cities go I've always been comfortable in Denver. Anything you want is close enough and pretty easy to get to yet you don't feel the oppression of too many people being too close. And overall people are still nice in Denver as compared to some more densely populated cities where people are more rude and aggressive.
One thing you can say about population density generally is the less it is the calmer folks are and the less guarded they act. Dicks live everywhere but the more space people have around them and the easier it is to get around the more likely they are to be polite and civil.
I've also lived in Portland, OR which has a population of 587,865 (making it the 28th largest city) in an area of 145.09 square miles for a population density of 4052 people per square mile. That's pretty damned near Denver's population density. I loved living in Portland during the two months per year it didn't rain. The vibe in Portland is great, but for me the overall weather was too dreary, sunless and wet for the bulk of the year. All my leather shoes rotted in my closet after becoming consumed by green mold as did some of my leather bound books due to dampness. I should have gotten a dehumidifier but I was naive to say the least. Denver averages 310 sunny days per year. Portland has 68 sunny days and 142 days when the sun even shows up for a while.
So I left Portland, OR and moved to Santa Cruz, CA with a population of 60,049 in an area of 15.828 square miles for a population density of 3793 people per square mile. Of course it has the Pacific Ocean as it's southern border and a Mediterranean Climate. I lived there for 14 years. It gets pretty foggy in the summer and there isn't enough sunlight to grow tomatoes or corn, but you can grow lovely gardens. Unfortunately it became far too expensive for middle class people to be able to afford to live during the time I lived there. And so we moved to Paradise, CA and have been here for 24 years come March.
Almost always the smaller the town the less population density there is compared to cities. Also the smaller the town the closer to open spaces and the great outdoors you find yourself. Now, I prefer living in a small town in the woods next to superb open lands, rivers and mountains vs. being in the density of congested cities while still being close enough to the cities I want to get to easily in a pretty short time to do any city-type stuff I want to do. In my case those cities are San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and the whole Bay Area.
Does the population density where you live matter to you?

by peregrine kate ♥ for Motor City Kossacks
A polar vortex could not stop six Motor City Kossacks from getting together on January 4th. Kudos, all! ACA Daily Kos celebrity, Brainwrap attended and brought the group up to date on his work.
Even folks from the White House are quoting his figures now. He also observed how odd he thought it was that the mainstream media (and governmental) sources were 1) not talking to him directly, seemingly content to take his numbers as valid, and 2) not conducting similar statistical aggregations on their own. We shared his astonishment, but agreed that he is doing an important job.
Also in attendance were prolific diarist BFSkinner, user ID 162795 and has been around since long before 2008. Amber6541, famous pootie/woozle diarist with an old user ID of 157580 and sydneyluv, who beat them all with the user ID of 132330. Long timers, these three!
Discussion included Michigan's crucial statewide elections in 2014 and the need to displace Rick "the Nerd" Snyder.
As hosts for upcoming NN14, the Motor City Kossacks are ready for their first meeting with the NN14 staff this January 9th. peregrine kate expressed the need to hear from as many politically radical, grass-roots organizers in Detroit during NN14 as possible and coalesce all this collective energy. All who attend this early meeting will get to shape the agenda. Please kosmail peregrine kate to attend this important event.
Here's one photo:
