This past November, three state wide offices were won by Democrats in Virginia: Terry McAuliffe was elected Governor, State Senator Ralph Northam was elected Lieutenant Governor, and State Senator Mark Herring was elected Attorney General.
Yesterday, voters in southeastern Virginia voted for a new representative to replace Ralph Northam as their senator. The candidates were Republican Wayne Coleman and Democrat Lynwood Lewis. At this point, the election is too close to call. Currently Lynwood Lewis leads by ten (10) votes, though not all votes are in yet. There isn't much doubt there will be a recount.
The election to replace Mark Herring here in District 33 in Northern Virginia will be held on January 21. The candidates are Jennifer T. Wexton (D), John C.L Whitbeck, Jr. (R), and Joe T. May (I).
These two elections are particularly significant because if the Democrats win both seats, they will control the state senate. If a republican wins either of these seats, the senate will continue to hold the senate.
In the last four years, with the office of the governor being held by republican Bob McDonnell and the senate and house also being controlled by republicans, the republicans have managed to pass some legislation attacking women's reproductive rights and also requiring voter IDs which will make it difficult or impossible for some of the poorer residents of Virginia to vote. In addition, the republicans have blocked the Medicaid expansion for an estimated 430,000 Virginians who are earning 133% of the Federal Poverty Level.
The election for state senate here in District 33 is going to be very close and will depend on voter turnout. If you live in this district, make sure to vote. If you know anyone in this district, please remind them to vote.
