The latest Public Policy Polling survey finds Democrat Charlie Crist and Republican incumbent Rick Scott separated by just two points. The polling document is here.

Crist leads Scott, 43 percent to 41 percent, with 15 percent of respondents saying they are undecided.

Driving these numbers are the candidates' mixed approval ratings: just 34 percent approve of Scott (compared with 51 percent who disapprove), and 36 percent view Crist favorably (compared with 46 percent who view him unfavorably).

Crist's rival for the Democratic nomination, former Senator Nan Rich, should be able to find some comfort in PPP's new survey. She trails Scott by only 6 points, 40-34, in the poll, indicating that in the unlikely event she were to defeat Crist, she would be viable against Scott. At least that's what this poll says.

The survey was conducted Jan. 16-21 and included 591 respondents.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and he is being shoved down our throats.  Scott's approval rating is 10 points lower than Obama's.

People do not like a flip flopper - and Crist is one.  He may be the only candidate capable of losing to Scott.

And yet everyone outside the state insists he must be our candidate.

haven't the Kochs been running negative ads against Crist in FL? That might have an impact.  I don't know if being a "flip flopper" is the reason he's down.  Romney flip flopped on a lot of things but it was the 47% remark and the insane platform that took him down.  Kerry was labeled a flip flopper but he lost due to Karl Rove's fear tactics. If Crist isn't the best candidate I have yet to see anyone here write a strong argument for Nan Rich.

      The hyperbole runneth thick.

Um Rick Scott won a hard fought primary in 2010 and beat a supposedly strong centrist Dem in a can't lose race.  He was a guy who ripped Medicare off to the tune of billions of dollars running to be governor of the state with more people ON Medicare than anywhere else.  Yet somehow our best STILL lost to this piece of shit.

Now in 2014 we're at it again and the same supposedly strong centrist Dem has declined a rematch and has decided instead to run in an open seat in the US House of Representatives despite the fact that she's be running against a deeply unpopular incumbent.  Despite the governor being liked less than cockroaches no Dem has stepped up other than former Senate Minority Leader Nan Rich and former governor/GOP Charlie Crist.

The Dem party in FL is a fucking mess.  There is no bench, few Dems with a high statewide profile.  Crist was a somewhat popular governor while in office.  He's beating Rich in the primary polling and he's ahead of Scott in the general polling.

You say he may be the only candidate capable of losing to Scott yet you offer no credible alternatives.  From our perspective he may be the only candidate capable of BEATING Scott.  Scott has a ton of money and with the Koch's behind him he'll have even more.  Crist is well known and has the ability to raise some money.  He may not be the ideal candidate by a mile but he's the best bet the Dems in Florida have and frankly it's too late at this point to get their fucking acts together to find someone else.

I find it really ironic that you're telling us Crist can't beat Scott when latest polling has him up 43-41 while at the same time the other Dem is DOWN by 6 to Scott.  If Crist can't beat Scott despite being on top, what does that say about Rich's chances?

      •  I did not say Crist (0+ / 0-)

couldn't beat Scott - I said he may be the only candidate who could lose to him.

That is not the same thing. Not even close.

Rick Scott may be the most unpopular Governor is the country. A decent candidate beats him.  Rich trails - it is true - because no one has heard of her.  And yet against her Scott STILL only gets to 40%.

It is true - the party is a mess.  But that doesn't mean the solution is to pick a candidate whose primary exposure is to make ads for the ambulance chasing Morgan and Morgan, and who has literally flipped on every issue of importance.

        •  The only candidate who could lose? (0+ / 0-)

So I guess Scott is so beatable that every other Dem in the great state of Florida is lining up to beat him?  Oh no?  You mean only Nan Rich was smart enough to see that she could beat Scott?  And yet polls have consistently shown Rih losing to Scott.

I guess Crist isn't the only candidate who could lose to Scott after all.

Again a serious case of hyperbole.  I get it though, you like Rich and hate Crist.  Thankfully it appears Dem primary voters in Florida have a different opinion.

It says a lot about the innate shittiness of Florida that he's the best the Democrats could come up with.
