Right to Keep and Bear Arms is a DKos group of second amendment supporters who have progressive and liberal values. We don't think that being a liberal means one has to be anti-gun. Some of us are extreme in our second amendment views (no licensing, no restrictions on small arms) and some of us are more moderate (licensing, restrictions on small arms.) Moderate or extreme or somewhere in between, we hold one common belief: more gun control equals lost elections. We don't want a repeat of 1994. We are an inclusive group: if you see the Second Amendment as safeguarding our right to keep and bear arms individually, then come join us in our conversation. If you are against the right to keep and bear arms, come join our conversation. We look forward to seeing you, as long as you engage in a civil discussion.
Senator Davis of Texas is a Democratic politician currently representing District 10 in the Texas Senate. Since her filibuster brought her into the public eye, there's been a drive to draft her for the Governor's chair. I'd like to see that back in the hands of the Democratic party (Perry and W did such a smash up job...) so I tried to get an interview with her (even one via email). It's great for the liberal pro-2A people out there to know there's a Democratic governor out there who support RKBA. Sadly "I blog at Daily Kos!" doesn't get my foot in the door.
Senator Davis has recently expressed her support for passing an open carry law in Texas.
Davis has said she supports expanding gun rights in Texas. In a statement to The Associated Press, she said that includes open-carry — a position that puts her at odds with her own party but could keep her from alienating gun rights advocates in a deeply conservative state where the Second Amendment is sacrosanct.
Right now open carry of a handgun in Texas is not legal. This is a surprise to some who think, "Hey, it's Texas. They have those gun nut laws, right?"
Not quite.
History suggests that Davis’ position is a pragmatic one. Former Gov. Ann Richards, a Democrat, vetoed a concealed handgun measure, but Republican George W. Bush made it a major campaign issue when he defeated Richards for governor in 1994. Texas passed its concealed handgun law the next year.
If only Gov Richards had passed the carry law...we might've been spared the disastrous presidency of W. I hope that this stance to support open carry is followed up by a pro-2A push on the part of Senator Davis to help alleviate the doubts that pro-RKBA voters in Texas may have.
I wish Senator Davis the best of luck in Texas. I hope that her pro-RKBA stance improves and the number of single issue votes that swing her way put her safely over the top.
Governor Davis has a nice ring to it.
