Some stories are too whack ball to even fathom.

Last April, in a rant posted on a blog, a Republican official noted that gays should be purged from the party.

A new candidate for a Michigan seat on the Republican National Committee wants gays "purged" from the GOP and claims homosexuality is a "perversion" created by Satan himself.

Mary Helen Sears of Houghton County in the state's Upper Peninsula, elected vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party's 1st District last year, posted a rant in April on the Schoolcraft County GOP website -- preceded by a warning asking readers to "please use your discretion before taking any decisions based on the information in this blog."

In the post, Sears claimed that homosexuals prey on children, argued that "Satan uses homosexuality to attack the living space of the Holy Spirit" and advocated that Republicans "as a party should be purging this perversion and send them to a party with a much bigger tent."

It's not that the wacky happened, it is what happened next that is most telling.

Last month, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak issued a joint statement asking Agema to step down from the RNC "for the good of the party." Instead, Agema's Michigan co-chair on the RNC, U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land (who had condemned Agema's anti-gay comments), resigned her seat, saying she wanted to focus on her campaign. Under party rules, the state GOP must pick a woman to take Land's place, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Enter Sears, who is running for Land's vacated RNC seat. She's, "if anything, to the right of RNC Committeeman Dave Agema on the political spectrum," wrote Macomb Daily columnist Chad Selweski.

Sears, in her post on the Schoolcraft County GOP website, wrote that Communist college professors were indoctrinating young people and claimed that Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory "gave rise to Hitler’s Third Reich, Mussolini’s Italy and Stalin’s Russia."

Priebus has lost all control over his party.  Noting that the party should distance themselves from this attitude they basically turn up their nose and keep going, leaving her as the heir apparent representative to the convention.

For all of that, it doesn't take much to find her backers:

Note: What you must remember is that, if you continue to stand behind those who are not committed to your platform and values, you enable the false notion that they have, which is that the constituency of the GOP will follow them no matter what they do or don't do."

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

What does that even mean? Does the HS require lots of closet space and all the 'hidden homos' in the R party are filling them up?

when they invited the Evangelical Christianists to share its bed back in the 1970s, with Jerry Falwell being the most prominent of the religious nuts. Ever since then, the Christianists have gradually tightened their grip on the Republican Party at the local, state, and national level, to the point today where it is literally impossible for any Republican official to endorse evolution or reproductive choice and have any future as a member of that party.

In other words, the Republican Party today is a de facto religious party in which only Evangelical Christianists or Opus Dei Catholics will have any influence or standing.

  •  Stealth jihad agenda? Lolz... (7+ / 0-)

As a MI resident I'm quite familiar with these deranged teabillies and the seeming inability of our local establishment Rs to corral them, in spite of their obvious desire that these people sit down and STFU. They insist they are powerless to remove Dave "goat killer" Agema even though a reading of the RNC rules reveals a clear path to kick him to the curb. The bottom line is they are scared to death of the teabaggers and their threats to primary the sitting governor, and anyone else who is deemed insufficiently crazy.

MI is one of those states that is only run by Republicans because of an unfortunate coincidence involving voter turnout and gerrymandering. They know their hold here is tenuous, their governor is deeply unpopular, and shit like this is not helping their effort.

I'm a straight man, so nothing is happening, but I've always wanted to meet a ninja.  But a gay, stealth jihadist ninja?  Holy shit, it would cross so many items off of my 'want to meet' list it would be nuts.

Now, if it was a redheaded Irish lesbian stealth ninja jihadist, my mind might explode

As a fellow Michigander I share your loathing for Snyder and the MI GOP, but not your implied optimism that he won't be re-elected. I think he'll cruise to a comfortable win, because he's got huge amounts of Koch Bros. and De Vos family money behind him, the Michigan media are largely in the tank for "The Nerd," and far too many Democrats will either sit at home or vote for Snyder on election day, just the way they did when Snyder was initially elected.

    they should do 5 things
one repeal the right   to work law
2 end the emergency management of benton harbor and Detroit
3 put together a work program which puts its citizens to work there's tons of abandoned houses that need to be torn down. just have the new green space be turned into a park.
4 put in rules that require all decisions made by the lame duck  legislature be subject to voter conformation. thats how the rs passed right to work in the first place.
5 raise taxes on the devos group and other right wing nut jobs. rub their noses in it..

written by  a Huff Po reader. It captures the depravity of the world view of this GOP Michigan leadership. The implications are disturbing and gravely serious.

There is no purity in loathing others for their differences, that has another name and it’s called absolutism where there is only one right way of being, 1 version of society, one type of culture, one belief system and if we are honest, one race.

There is nothing separating this woman from the little man with the mustache that broke the world in 2 in 1930 and if anybody should be expelled from an American political party, it should be the supremacists who hold their values as the only acceptable ones.

Like all absolutist she has hijacked religion as a banner so she can hide behind it as her cause.

It was done in Italy in the 1920s, Germany in the 30s and is being done in extreme right and totalitarian states, in the Muslim world and Russia, where theology has merged with politics.

There’s an obvious reason why the founding fathers wrote of separation of church and state and that was that people could use religion to make outcasts of anybody that didn’t fill their interpretation of faith, it was a breeding ground for absolutism and a diminishing of culture by eliminating any other lifestyle, viewpoint or belief not sanctioned by the prevailing fundamental religious beliefs of a state sanctioned faith.

We’ve had an age of enlightenment or 2 since this woman’s view was the accepted norm, we will not become a Christian caliphate under Sharia, Christian far right law.

Long live freedom to be who you are and take this woman’s words to heart Republican LGBT’s and stop seeing yourselves as trapped in a state of permanent Stockholm Syndrome they don’t like you, they put on false smiles around you but given any chance they’d eliminate you.
