There is a break in the 14 months of almost continuous dry weather. However, California has never been known for its moderation. What has happened is that intense tropical level rains have moved into the North Bay across a fairly narrow band. Where I am it has been raining nonstop for over 24 hrs. and at times it has been heavy. According to local rain gauges on the net there has been about 7 ins in the past couple of days. There is now heavy runoff with some very minor flooding in low spots.
It looks like there has been moderate rainfall further north where the main reservoirs are located. There has been very little rain south of the Bay Area. There are predictions for more storms during the next week. This is most definitely a change in the weather.
It is entirely too soon to asses the status of the very serious drought. The telling information about that will be the levels of water storage in the reservoirs and the depth of the snow pack in the mountains. However, as far as it goes, this is good news.
