Have you ever driven on Route 66 ?

Everybody knows the song, right ? "Flagstaff, Arizona don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino." It's one of the most covered songs in pop music. "It winds from Chicago to L.A., more than two-thousand miles all the way." I think it actually starts on

the outskirts of Chicago and it doesn't end in downtown L.A. but at the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica Pier, near where modern-day I-10 terminates. It crosses eight states on its way to the sea, including Kansas where a 13-mile section just barely clips the corner of that state. Route 66 was established in 1926 and wasn't fully paved until 1937. It has some interesting history.

The full title of the famous song is Get Your Kicks on Route 66 but the folks in this picture were not getting any kicks, believe me. During the Great Depression, the first one, Route 66 was the main route to California for Dust Bowl refugees. I'm sure most of you have read John Steinbeck's classic novel The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, and no doubt seen the film adaptation released the following year. You've probably heard the songs and stories of Woody Guthrie or seen the photographs of Dorothea Lange. Those stories, those songs and images, represent the real Route 66, not two guys in a Corvette convertible.

Now, when the refugees got to California, that section of Route 66 is now called I-40 and crosses the state line a little north of Lake Havasu, they were not welcomed with open arms. While a few at the top of the economic food chain might welcome a large influx of desperately poor, low-wage immigrants, many did not. "Okie" was not a term of endearment. Dust Bowl refugees faced real bigotry and discrimination. A popular joke in Southern California during the War went like this: C'mon all you Okies let's go to Japan, we took California without losing a man. Now that's actually kinda' funny, but underneath jokes like that was talk about ignorant Okies and dirty kids and how can those people live like that. Merle Haggard's famous song Okie from Muskogee is more than just social conservatism and gratuitous hippie-bashing, although it is that. When Merle sings, "I'm proud to be an Okie ..." he's owning the slur that had stung him in his youth. That's why that song resonated with its audience.

So what changed ? Whence all this nonsense about getting kicks on 66 ? The War of course. A big chunk of The Arsenal of Democracy was located in Southern California and there was manufacturing, jobs for all who wanted them, prosperity. Right after the War, in 1946, Nat "King" Cole released the first recording of (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66. Route 66 was no longer a Trail of Tears but a place to celebrate freedom, prosperity and the newly-born car culture.

Old Route 66 is mostly gone now, bypassed by Eisenhower's interstate system. Some modern highways use the same route under a different designation. Anybody in SoCal who's driven over Cajon Pass has driven a piece of it. I've driven a lot of it here in Arizona. It's called Old 66 in Flagstaff where it's still a major thoroughfare. The tiny town of Williams, Arizona, the so-called Gateway to the Grand Canyon, sits on the last section of Route 66 to be bypassed and that's their other claim to fame. There's whole industry of Route 66 kitsch now and there are a bunch of Historic Route 66 tourist traps in New Mexico. How 'bout it Newdists ...

Have you ever driven on Route 66 ?

Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks Arrive

by EagleOfFreedomfor Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks

I'm so impressed with the Seattle Kossacks, right now. EagleOfFreedom offered to take up the reins of collecting local Kossacks for camaraderie and action. In a very short time he started the group, communicated with me, set the event and got almost a dozen folks to join the ranks in person. Kudos!

So, you Seattle Kossacks, you've got a group now and John Crapper has offered to be an admin of the group. How swell is that?

SEATTLE KOSSACKS! Look for each other in the comments and gather together, invite one another and let's see more folk show up at the next event. AND the next action event.

To quote one of the attendees:

Once again Kossacks prove they are for real.

SFKossacks Welcome Matching Mole and bwren
with a Birding Event Plus Dinner

by navajofor SFKossacks

Last Sunday, matching mole, who flew in from the East Coast, and bwren, who flew in from Seattle, were picked up and chaffeured by the founder of Dawn Chorus, lineatus. She drove them to meet with other SFKossacks and Central Valley Kossacks to do some bird watching in the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area on San Francisco Bay. I'll leave the telling of that story up to lineatus in her Sunday morning series.

I'll be covering the dinner we had that evening to welcome our out-of-towners.

DKos Asheville: LIVE!

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

Wow, the standard setters for Daily Kos group organizing just one-upped the bar again! Not only do they meet for socializing, they get themselves on radio shows to advertise the event, they invite local candidates and progressive causes to speak to our Kossacks and then fully cater an event to reward all attendees. Wow. Just wow.

More than 30 Kossacks got together amping up and organizing the Asheville atmosphere for getting out the vote. Here's one photo:

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
