Last month, Phyllis Schlafly cobbled together a report that argues any Republicans who support comprehensive immigration reform are wasting their time because Latino and Asian-American immigrants lean Democratic. Well, Schlafly doubled down on it on Friday when she dropped in at theDove, a local Christian television station in Medford, Oregon. In a lengthy interview with station owner Perry Atkinson on his show, "Focus Today," Schlafly claimed that for the most part, immigrants--even legal ones--are a gold mine for Democrats because they "don't understand this country." She said that since most immigrants come from countries that are welfare states, they have no concept of limited government.
But then Schlafly went several miles off the deep end. She offered as an example of the kind of immigrants who "don't understand this country"--the Tsarnaev brothers. In Schlafly's scenario, before the Tsarnaevs launched their scheme to plant bombs at the Boston Marathon, they came to this country claiming they were seeking asylum, then collected around $100,000 in welfare. And Atkinson didn't even bat an eyelash.
Watch the whole thing here--and pile up the dislikes.
We already knew that Schlafly was the original loathsome right-wing granny. It's bad enough that she wants to limit immigration for nakedly political reasons. But to even suggest immigration reform will open the door for more terrorist attacks? Even by her standards, this is whackadoodle.
