Back to the music tonight.
This one's a cover, something I very rarely do. Surprisingly, it was not inspired by the astounding number of friends and loved ones I've had to say goodbye to over the last year (though such events did offer plenty of video stock), but is instead a cover that's been on my mind for more than 30 years.
While I've known the song since childhood--the "Alive and Well in Paris" revue was one of my mom's faves--it wasn't until I heard Bowie's version in the Ziggy Stardust days that I realized what a lovely, tender love song it is, possibly one of Brel's best works. And it was in those days, when the rhythms of Jamaica permeated my mind, that the idea of a dub version came to me.
When I told GF how long I'd been thinking about the cover, she asked why I'd never cut it. Having no good answer, I went ahead and did so.
My thanks to the individuals and institutions who allowed me to shoot these scenes, and to the immensely talented George "Keys" Izquierdo for his B3 work.
