I had to share this story. Author
James Patterson, whom I had never heard of until yesterday, announced that he is launching a program to give $1 million of his money to dozens of
independent book stores. The money, which will help stores address needs such as updating computer systems and remodels, will start flowing into independent book stores all across the United States next week. I hope this move helps out independent bookstores and more importantly makes people think and act differently about where they buy books.
Bookstores, like the one pictured above, are some of my favorite places and among the favorite places to go for my children. And, yes I buy where I browse. So, I am invested in them surviving. I prefer paper backs, but I have recently found the ease of using e-Books as well. How great is it to borrow 20 e-books from the library for my kids when we go on a trip rather than drag fewer but heavier books along? And, while I personally have yet to buy an e-book, I know why people do.
So, I hope that James Patterson's giving will remind others of the joys of walking into a bookstore and browsing. And hopefully, people will remember that in order to maintain that privilege, then books and e-books need to be purchased at independent bookstores. There is still plenty to buy an Amazon besides books.
