spring photo: Spring Spring_.jpgGUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside.

You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library here. Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream and easily find the link to the latest one. It's just that easy!

A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.

spring photo: SPRING Spring.gifI don't really have much of a topic tonight, truth be told. Winter has worn me right down to a nub. I'm antsy and overworked and I'm sick to death of short, cold days and piles of snow and everything to do with this endless season (except cocoa; I'm still okay with that).

I want it to be spring already. WHY CAN'T IT BE SPRING ALREADY, PEOPLE? WHYYY??

I want to walk my dog without worrying about slipping on ice or being blocked by snowbanks.

I want to see actual sun for at least a little while after I leave work.

I want there to be buds on the trees and flowers poking up through actual green grass and for the air to smell like new growth and not frozen mud.

I want to walk to work without a big bulky coat (and hat and scarf and gloves and boots) for a change.

       spring photo: spring spring.jpg

But the time change is still a couple weeks away, and actual Spring-like weather even further away for those of us who dwell this far North. Until then, we'll have to combat our cabin fever with various distractions and rampant silliness.

Distractions are a good thing, and silly distractions are (in my humble opinion) even better for keeping us entertained and occupied when cravings hit, or when we catch ourselves wallowing in negative thoughts, or find ourselves stuck in a behavioral rut. Silly distractions might not be the only path to self-improvement and peace of mind, but they're certainly one of the more amusing ones. If you need a distraction, a mood-lifter, or just a bit of silliness to keep your mind off things, you've come to the right place.

Ladies and Gentlemen, to kick things off, I give you the magnificently silly Paul Rudd:

Share your favorite silly (or even not-so-silly) distractions!

Tell us what you're looking forward to about Spring---or, if you're one of those lucky duckies who lives somewhere warm, remind the rest of us what it's like!

Post your favorite Springtime song!

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird). The weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below. There's an open slot just calling your name!
Thu PM: Vacationland (day late, dollar short)
spring photo: Spring spring.jpgFri AM: flumptytail
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: paulitics
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: anodnhajo
Mon PM: Open
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Open
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: nokkonwud
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?
