At the CPAC today, Ann Coulter called for death squads for Republicans who supported comprehensive immigration reform.
“Amnesty is forever and you got to vote for the Republicans one more time and just make it clear; but if you pass amnesty, that’s it, it’s over and then we organize the death squads for the people who wrecked America.”
She made her remarks during a faux debate with Mickey Kaus, who wound up holding all the same positions she did, according to People for the American Way. That raises a fundamental question about whether the Libertarian wing still has a place in the GOP given that Coulter would create a massive police state for the purposes of rounding up and deporting 11 million immigrants, including children who were brought here by their parents at a young age.
Later, at a press conference with Phylis Schlafly, she played the victim:
“My favorite network for humor is MSNBC. They’re always sneering, demographics are changing. No this isn’t a natural process,” Coulter said. “It’s like you’re being raped and the guy is telling you ‘my penis is in you.’ No, you’re raping me. Demographics are changing by force. There is nothing natural about it.”
Also, today,
750 immigrants staged a hunger strike at a detention center in Washington for better treatment, more pay for jobs, and better food. If Ann Coulter and people like her come into power, expect the practice of treating immigrants and other people like cattle to generate even more hunger strikes and unrest throughout the country.
NPR reports on some exchanges at the CPAC showing that the gap between the Libertarian and Authoritarian wings of the GOP will be hard to bridge. There were speakers like Governor Jim Gilmore calling Snowden a traitor and a coward while another , Bruce Fein, said:
Responding to Gilmore, Bruce Fein, a libertarian lawyer who's been involved in a lawsuit against the federal government, said that he ignores the more rampant lawlessness which is "government violating the rule of law."
"All these examples of government lawlessness, total silence on Gov. Gilmore's side," Fein said. "And when the government becomes a lawbreaker, it invites every man and woman to become a law unto themselves."
And Alexander McCobin of Students for Liberty said that Gay Rights was the Civil Rights of the 21st Century.
"The kind of religious liberty that has been infringed upon for decades has been the liberty of those whose religious practices support same-sex marriage," McCobin said. "The government has prohibited them from engaging in the religious practices that they want. This is the civil rights of the 21st century."
This is the sort of heresy that the GOP will have to deal with more and more as societal attitudes towards immigration and gay rights change.
