After a group of Oregon Republicans endorsed marriage equality over the weekend, the state party is
furiously denying reports that it has dropped its support for banning same-sex marriage. That would be lame enough on its own, but what's even lamer is their "argument" for why they are against equality. According
to their statement:
The Republican Party is proud to be known as the party of liberty. As the party of freedom, we believe that Americans should be free to live their lives as they wish, so long as they do not impede the freedom of others to do so.
Yeah, I know that sounds like a pretty good argument for marriage equality. But to these Republicans, it's not. It's the foundation for their argument in favor of banning same-sex marriage, because:
We oppose the use of government to suppress and control your rights by interfering in bedrock social institutions.
So ... if you believe government shouldn't discriminate against same sex couples, then you're using the government to "suppress and control" freedom? Obviously that doesn't make a single bit of sense. But then again, what else do you expect when someone tries to defend the indefensible?
