Two days ago, ultraconservative Catholic activist Austin Ruse, while guest-hosting for American Family Radio morning drive-time host Sandy Rios, called for left-leaning academics to be "taken out and shot." He was deservedly called out by Right Wing Watch and yours truly. Amazingly, Ruse was allowed back on the air yesterday, and used the occasion to go on an on-air tantrum about how those big bad libruls were trying to muzzle him.
Well, within the last hour, someone in Tupelo must have finally gotten his or her head out of the sand. Via a couple of terse comments on Facebook posted within the last hour (around 8 am Eastern or 7 am Central), AFR announced that it had parted ways with Ruse.
The Wildmons shouldn't get any credit for this at all. After all, they only did what any halfway responsible broadcaster would do. One has to wonder how in the world Ruse was even allowed back on the air yesterday. The most benign interpretation is that the Wildmons thought Ruse was going to apologize. Last I checked, when you make comments like that, no broadcaster that doesn't have its head completely up its rear end would allow you on the air ever again.
Next step, it seems, is to get Ruse fired from his day job as president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute. I'm trying to find contact information for the C-FAM board of directors--presumably his bosses. The sooner Ruse is cut down to size, the better.
