Mount Pleasant, SC- Bus Driver Appreciation Day will be recognized in the Charleston area on Tuesday, March 18 when Transit Riders give thank you cards to our transit system’s hard working drivers at stops in Mount Pleasant, Charleston and North Charleston.
The effort commemorates the day when the first known horse drawn public transit service was begun in Paris France with the support of mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal. Over 3000 horse drawn Omnibuses would be running routes in London two hundred years later. Charleston’s own 200 year public transit history includes public ferries, electric street cars and bus service. Last year American Public Transit ridership rose to a new peak of 10.65 billion passenger trips, the highest level since 1956.
The huge amount of progress made and the immense amount of freedom and liberated human potential provided by public transit here in Charleston would not be possible without the work of the 2 system’s over 200 drivers, mechanics and dispatchers. From drivers who hand out Halloween Treats as passengers board to those who sing Johnny Cash Songs while crossing the Ravenel Bridge, each driver brings something personal to the community of people who ride their routes. From the moment the first buses crank up before dawn until the last #10 rolls back into the yard, the ups and downs of life’s journey are shared on the bus.
On behalf of all the riders on CARTA and Tri County Link, Hungryneck Straphangers would like to thank the men and women who make our shared journeys work.
Printable cards like those being used in the effort can be downloaded at
