GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library here. Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream and easily find the link to the latest one. It's just that easy!
A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?"
Mary Oliver
I didn't know Elliot Burton, a local man who died last week after being hit by a car on a busy street at the tag end of rush hour, but I kind of wish I had. By most accounts, he was an interesting, somewhat eccentric guy who spent most of his life trying to make the world a better place to live in.
His fascinating obituary chronicled a lifetime filled with work in service to others (a stint in the Army Reserves, careers in social services and teaching, time spent fostering and working with youth), acts of kindness (purchasing computers for students, volunteering at soup kitchens), and appeals to our better nature (letters to the editor supporting equality issues, civic involvement). He created art; he collected nature and poems and images; he cultivated community. He was a good man, trying to put a little good out there in the world.
I think he succeeded.
Communities are held together by people like Mr. Burton, people with an altruistic urge to help others, to fight injustice and right wrongs, to lift others up when they need a hand, to make this a kinder, better world. Grassroots organizations can't do without them; neither can most volunteer efforts or support communities, like the ones on Daily Kos---including this one right here.
We may not live those values in an overt or 24/7 kind of way---heck, we all have our selfish impulses and sour moods, and times when we're so overwhelmed we can't think of anyone but ourselves---but (GOP evidence to the contrary) humans are hard-wired to work toward the greater good, and we all display altruistic impulses and make time to help others (family, friends, and communities alike). We appreciate fairness, and thrive on social support. And we reap the benefits of that support too...after all, collective support is a recognized stress-buster, and as that last linked article points out, stress itself can be as destructive as smoking.
Showing up here, contributing to the community, walking new folks through the process, sharing your experience and advice, lending a sympathetic ear to someone who is struggling, keeping track of the details, providing a kind word or much-needed distraction...those are all ways we each put a little good out there in the world. Most of us do things like that in our offline lives as well, planting little acorns, tending the seedlings, knowing we may not even be around to see the mighty oaks we've nurtured grow and thrive. Putting a little good out there in the world pays off in ways we see or feel right away, and in ways we don't; it makes the world a better, kinder, happier place.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird). The weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below. There's an open slot just calling your name!
Thu PM: Vacationland
Fri AM: flumptytail
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: paulitics
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: anodnhajo
Mon PM: Open
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Open
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: Open (nokkonwud on hiatus?)
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.
