Watching old friends, real friends, soul friends
Cuffed, goin’ to jail in Georgia
For fighting for healthcare for the poor
Just trying to get the politicians to take
The Medicaid offered to the state and it’s poor
Poor folks like so many of us are
Or have been, losin’ hope poor
Outta options poor
I wonder what twists in the soul of a man with power
I once knew that governor, once a good and kind man
Now so determined to watch the people of his state suffer
While arresting others for demanding that he find
That the governor find the humanity lost in his soul
I once thought I knew
What twists in us that turns the compassion to hate
That turns the yearning for justice to anger
At those suffering injustice
What twists in the soul that makes the weak,
The vulnerable, those who test our chest pounding faith
Into foes that must be crushed at all costs.
